I've ran Spybot, Avg Virus and Anti-Spyware, Mcafee Stinger, Adaware and I'm having Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisableNotify and Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusDisableNotify come back every time I run Spybot. I ran the scans because at the time I had pop-ups for "your computer is infected with spyware, please download"...blah blah blah, one certain infection caught my eye though, it was a smitfraud infection, so I first ran all the programs and they picked up on a lot of infections, removed them all and I had a few come back, including the smitfraud infection, a couple days ago ran the programs again and it removed them, and they haven't came back since, except for these two. My main problem is with opening programs, the program will "hang up" for several minutes before actually loading, including internet explorer. Now I've got two logs, one from Hijackthis and the other from Smitfraudfix, here they are..any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I Actually wrote down the infections found the first time:

1. Blue Streak
2. Casale Media
3. Double Click
4. DSSAgent
5. Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntivirusDisableNotify
6. Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisableNotify
7. Nous-Tech ucleaner
8. Nous-Tech udefender
9. Smitfraud-C
10. Smitfraud.msvps
11. Wild Tangent
12. Zlob.Downloader.vcd

This was the first time scanned. Second time #5, 6, 11 came back. Third time none came back. Then the computer started to "hang up" between programs like I said earlier, so I scanned it again and #2, 5, 6, 9 came back again. Removed them again, and scanned then only #5, 6 comes back. Hope this helps.

Hello McAlisters,

Blue Streak , Casale Media, Double Click
are tracking cookies.

Some of the items you listed look like cookies, which are merely text files on your computer that sites can use to store bits of information. (For example, a shopping site might use a cookie to store your login information, or the contents of your shopping cart.) Some sites use them to track you, which is the likely cause of the items you listed being detected. But they are a minimal worry - especially when compared to spyware and other potentially unwanted software.

I'm having Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisableNotify and Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusDisableNotify come back every time I run Spybot.

That is not a problem.

If you highlight the detection with your mouse, Spybot will give you this description after you click the bar over to the right:
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntivirusDisableNotify

Company: Microsoft
Product: Windows Security Center
Threat: Changed Security Center Settings

Functionality
This entry only wants to bring to your attention that "someone" has disabled one or more notifications in the Windows security center.
If you’ve changed the settings yourself you can safely tell Spybot to exclude those detections from further searches. In order to do this please right click on each in turn, then click "exclude this detection from future searches". That way, should any other part of security center settings change Spybot will still detect those. For more information please visit our forum linked above.

"Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify" , if this is found, the Security Center does not notify about the antivirussoftware.
This could have been disabled by your antivirussoftware to avoid double notifications. If your antivirussoftware is up and running , you can ignore this detection.

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisableNotify:

Company: Microsoft
Product: Windows Security Center
Threat: Changed Security Center Settings

Functionality
This entry only wants to bring to your attention that "someone" has disabled one or more notifications in the Windows security center.

"Windows Security Center.FirewallDisableNotify" , if this is found, the Security Center does not notify about the firewall.
This could have been disabled by your personal firewall to avoid double messages. If your personal firewall is up and running, you can ignore this detection

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

NOTE: Delete that SmitfraudFix version you downloaded previously and download it again! Also delete C:\rapport.txt

Please download SmitfraudFix

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of the SmitfraudFix report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Really appreciate the help. Internet explorer is still extremely slow to respond when first loading though, didn't seem to help that portion. Thanks again.

Hi McAlisters,

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************
I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.

Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\2.0.301.7164\swg.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: The hdtip - {3DE5D178-BD44-4709-A9CC-3211619A5B19} - C:\WINDOWS\hdtip.dll (file missing)

These are optional fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
(Description: Intel hotkey applet. Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

*******************************************

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Note : If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
    C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\********_******.log
    (where "********_******" is the "date_time")
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer, post a new Hijackthis log, OTMoveIt log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Computer seems to be running a little faster, but the internet explorer is still super slow when the window first comes up, seems to be okay once surfing, but if I open another window-it'll take that window about 5 minutes to load up, very frustrating. Again though appreciate the time and help..

Hi McAlisters,

I dont see any malware in your log, but lets dig deeper.

Let's run ComboFix.

Disable your Norton Antivirus, as that will stop ComboFix from working.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

If you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you have and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

Disconnect from the Internet while running ComboFix.

Temporarily disable any anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.
Do NOT run ComboFix more than once.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Do not run Combofix more than once.
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".
The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have Norton Antivirus installed then disable script blocking so it will not interfere with the fix. Note that your version may not have the script blocking feature.

To disable Norton Script blocking Service:

* Disable the Script Blocking Service:
To open Services, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
Find ScriptBlocking services, Right-click the service, and then click and then click Properties.
On the General tab, under Startup, click Disabled.
Under Service Status, click Stop button. Click Apply button.

* Disable the Script Blocking In Norton Settings:
Start Norton Antivirus.
Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton Antivirus. The Norton Antivirus Options dialog box appears.
Click Script Blocking.
Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
Click OK
You can reenable it afterwards when everything is clean again.

Hi McAlisters,

I dont see any malware in your Hijackthis log or the ComboFix log, but we can do some minor clean up.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

Reboot, post a fresh Hijackthis log and tell me how your computer is running.

How much memory (RAM) do you have on this computer?
To find out how much RAM is in your computer:
click on the Start button.
Select Control Panel.
Select System.
Choose the General tab.
The amount of RAM will be listed near the bottom of the window.

Yeah seems to run the same. Only when starting internet explorer, when it first loads, takes about 5 minutes to respond, then it'll start to connect to the website. Anyways, running a Pentium 4 CPU 3.06 Ghz with 506MB of RAM. Again I appreciate the help with this crazy issue.

You log looks clean, so the slow IE is not caused by malware.

Check you Task Mangager to see what processes are using CPU when you are using IE6.

I see you are running the old IE6 version.
Update your Internet Explorer - Your current version is vulnerable to attacks.
I cannot stress this strong enough.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/

You can also use a different browser, like FireFox http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
