Hello! , and thank you in advance for this forum, and for any help you can provide.

My name is Interro.
I thought I was so smart all these years, keeping my computer clean with AdAware and Spybot, tidying up with CCleaner and a defrag every now and then, keeping my email circle small, and just not going anywhere risky.

Who needs a firewall? It interferes with my DSL. Who needs virus protection? I haven't gotten one in the four-year life of this pc, or the pc before this one.

Who needs that stuff? I guess, I do!!
I could blame it all on my 12-year-old daughter's sudden obsession with everything Internet, but who knows? It might just as easily be something I did.

Well, enough eating crow. It just makes me so *mad* that people create these terrible malicious programs!

Anyway, I have spent the last week going over the "Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log".

I have done everything on there at least twice, maybe not all in the same order the second time through, but the computer would crash, and I would have to start over, or I would have to go to work, and it seemed as if every time I restarted, any gains I had made would disappear. (For example, I just ran Spybot again, and Virtumonde is still there. I am "Fixing" it again as I write this.)

I'm sorry, but I have mixed up some of my notes as to which program told me I had what, in a few cases.

These, I don't remember which program told me:

C:\WINDOWS\b122.exe is infected with Adware.MaxSearch
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\pinstall.dll is infected with Adware.Look2Me
C:\Program Files\Temporary\wininstall.exe is infected with Adware.MaxSearch
C:\Documents and Settings\Pammy\Local Settings\Temp\D28D.tmp is infected with Adware.Purityscan

(The above were earlier in the week. I am not sure if they are gone now or not.)

Bit Defender says:
trojan.downloader.EV
trojan.vundo.dsn

Housecall says:
vundo aae windows/system32/qommljh.dll
vundo xh windows/system32/wtstuoxi.dll

I saw on another section of the forums, that there is a program called VundoFix. I downloaded and ran it, did "Remove Vundo" and just now ran it again, with Vundo not found.

Firefox runs fine, but IE7 is all but useless, between the redirects and the popups.
(Some of the popup titles have contained the words 'vundo' and 'reditty'.)

Lastly, here is my HJT log:

Hi,

I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..
I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed!
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install one first!!

* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/
This is a free Antivirus.

Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding.
Then reboot.
After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".
There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.
Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

Hi miekiemoes, and thanks for your quick response. I am so thrilled and relieved to have some help on this.

Yes, it was very dumb to not have any antivirus installed. I must have been living a charmed life to have not had major trouble before now.

Once the problem began this week, though, I think I got confused.
I saw on the forums that having more than one antivirus running can confuse matters, so I thought I shouldn't install one until after I ran all the other scans like Panda and BitDefender.

Now I understand. I am typing this at my work computer right now, but as soon as I get home to the infected pc this afternoon I will follow your instructions, and post new info.

Thank you again.

Hi,

An Antivirus is needed, mainly to PREVENT malware, because without an Antivirus, your system is wideopen for infection. That's why an Antivirus is needed on every computer since it runs as a realtime guard and prevents malware in the first place.
Once you get infected anyway, it will be able to remove it as well since it's more powerful in removal than an online scanner

Hi again, miekiemoes.
Avira is installed.
An Avira scan has just finished.
I have rebooted.

Here is the text of the report from Avira:

So sorry, but must go to bed for a little while---have to go back to work in just a few hours. I will have most of the next two days, though, to try and get this straightened out.

Fingers crossed,

Hi,

* Download ComboFix from here.
**Save it to your desktop**

In case you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

* Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Note - Your internet connection will be terminated while ComboFix runs. Do Not attempt to re-enable it. Should ComboFix terminate prematurely, restart the computer to restore connectivity.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".

When finished and after reboot (in case it rebooted), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Good morning. (or Good whatever-time-it-is-where you-are!)

Just ran Combofix.
Computer has rebooted, and I have a log.

All the while I was running it, though, I kept getting a message from Avira that "Trojan horse TR/Drop.Agent.JC" had been detected. As soon as I would choose to Delete it, a new warning for the same thing would pop up again. In your message, you said

"In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them."

but Drop.Agent was showing up as a Trojan yesterday, and before I used Combofix, so I did not think it was a Combofix-related warning.

Do I need to download and run Combofix again because of this?

Here is the Combofix log:

Hi,

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

I am excited!

Followed your instructions, created the CFScript, ran ComboFix again.
All the while, that same Avira warning about Drop. Agent kept coming up over, and over, and. . .

Computer rebooted.
No Drop.Agent warnings!

yay!

Okay, here is the new ComboFix log:

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Also, let me know if you recognise/know next processes:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\WrtMon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\WrtProc.exe

Could they be related with your Wtablet ?

Hi miekiemoes, and thanks for prompting me to come on back.
I have had a work situation taking up my every spare moment, and I hope you will accept my sincere apology for not replying sooner. It was thoughtless of me, and I just want to tell you again how grateful I am for your help, and how much I appreciate the nature of what you do. It is heroic, like an underground army fighting against an insidious evil.

Anyways. . .

the computer is running great. Absolutely great.
I was concerned that having the firewall and antivirus would slow things down, but it seems to be running even better than ever, probably because of the garbage that's not there now.

The processes:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\WrtMon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\WrtProc.exe

appeared immediately upon installing my new Canon printer (Pixma MP530) and the software it came with.
I looked them up, and found this:

http://pcpitstop.com/spycheck/SWDetail.asp?fn=WrtMon.exe
http://pcpitstop.com/spycheck/SWDetail.asp?fn=WrtProc.exe

They don't seem to harm anything, and if I am not printing, I just End Task in Task Manager, and have had no problems.
(I am so pleased with the printer, btw. It is terrific, and for once, the software it came with is all very very useful and user-friendly.)

The only other thing that I am wondering about is, some of the processes I have blocked with Sygate. I am at work right now, so I don't have my list of names, but there are some that pop up ("Sygate has blocked. . .such and such. . .from contacting the network.") that seem to be related to important Windows stuff, and I don't know if I need to unblock them.

(While fighting the Vundo battle, if I was not certain what something was when Sygate asked me, I blocked it, even if it sounded kind of official, because so many of the Virtumonde/Vundo files sounded real, too.)

So that is where I am at. You have rescued us, and I am indebted to you for all the holiday emails from family I am now able to read without trouble. Thank you so much!

Is there anything else you think we ought to do?

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback about those files. I knew they were legit but wanted to know with what they are related.

Concerning your Sygate, To unblock programs, it should be somewhere in the Application settings where you can click the Programs being blocked and click until they a green checkmark appears.
But if you're unsure, leave it as it is - when you run a certain program that needs that component, Sygate will ask you again anyway.

Glad I could help.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Happy Surfing again!
