Hi everyone, and I'd like to thank the experts here in advance for all the help they contribute.
Recently, one of the computers on the network started acting strange. Symptoms include:
1) The Symantec firewall disabled itself, and I can't start it back up. The Symantec Anti-virus real time protection also disabled itself, and if I re-enable it, the real-time protection gets disabled again a few seconds later. Reinstalling the software fixes the problem until the next reboot.
2) If I run a search on Google and click on a link, I get redirected to www.daily-search.com (I've closed the window before anything showed up, so I hope nothing bad resulted from that).
3) I get random "security alerts" akin to the ones generated by the SysProtect malware.
4) Random pop-ads while browsing

I ran a Symantec AV scan and found two infections. Both were a "D3D8P.dll" file. One was in the system32 folder, the other in a temp folder. The antivirus was able to remove the dll in the temp folder, but unable to remove or quarantine the dll in the system32 folder.
Since then, I have tried the following:
Re-install Symantec and update virus definitions, reboot in safemode, re-run scan, still can't delete files.
Running McAffee virus scan and Panda's online scan. Neither was able to remove the infection.
Ran ATF Cleaner and SDFix, no luck.
Installed Hijackthis, renamed it to "makkahsoft", and ran it. Checked all entries related to D3D8P.dll and clicked "Fix this". When I re-run the scan, those entries still appear.
Downloaded Symantec's FixVundo (I read several other posts that described similar symptoms to mine, and it turned out those people had a strain of the Vundo virus). FixVundo crashes before it completes its scan.
Downloaded VundoFix v6.7, Vundofix doesn't find anything. If I manually add c:\windows\system32\d3d8p.dll and ask Vundofix to delete it, Vundofix says it needs to reboot my computer to delete it. After I reboot my computer, Vundofix still says that it can't delete the file so it asks again for me to reboot.
Finally, I've downloaded Killbox and instructed it to delete the DLL files, also without any success.

Here is my HJT Log:

Some more information: The infected computer is an office computer, so I am only able to access it during working hours (9AM - 5PM PST Weekdays). The computer is actually my boss's computer, so I am not exactly sure how he got himself infected. He has a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford, but I still have a feeling he clicked on one of those "FREE STUFF CLICK HERE" messages. Anyway, I have full administrative access to his computer. The virus had apparently been on his computer for several days before he told me about it, and during the whole time his computer was connected to the office network, which includes a shared drive on my computer. However, I have not had any symptoms of infection on my computer, and an anti-virus scan on my computer says that it is clean. So I gather that the virus spreads through the user actively running some sort of process. Finally, a few days after my boss's computer was infected, I received an email from Comcast stating that someone on our network was sending spam email. I have a suspicion that the sending of this spam email is related to the virus. I have since crippled the email client on this computer so it can't send anymore emails.

I would be extremely appreciative of any help you guys could lend me. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum MarkAllen
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read/evaluate.

Now download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.

Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.

Hi Richie,
Thanks for the warm welcome and for the fast response!

I ran combofix as per your instructions. Here is the log: (I checked the windows\system32 directory to confirm that the d3d8p.dll was actually removed, and I didn't see the dll file so I assume it was successfully removed).

BTW, the file "d3d8p.dll.bak" appeared when I tried to delete d3d8p.dll with Killbox a few days ago. After Combofix removed d3d8p.dll, I was able to remove d3d8p.dll.bak by manually deleting it.

All of the symptoms seemed to have dissappeared. Furthermore, the computer is booting up a lot quicker than it used to.
Are there any more steps to be taken?

Click on Start/Run,copy and paste ComboFix /u into the 'Open:' space, then press Ok.

Posted Image

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Click on the 'Cleanup' button Posted Image
When you do this a text file named cleanup.txt will be downloaded from the internet.
If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so.
When the 'Confirm' box appears click 'Yes'.
Restart your pc when prompted.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
Do not run it just yet.

Download\install 'SuperAntiSpyware Home Edition Free Version' from here:
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE

Launch SuperAntiSpyware and click on 'Check for updates'.
Once the updates have been installed, exit SuperAntiSpyware.
Do not run it just yet.

You might want to print/copy the following as you need to be in Safe Mode from here on.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Now double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click 'Select All' found at the bottom of the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
Click Firefox at the top and choose 'Select All' from the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.
NOTE:
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click 'No' at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser,do this also:
Click Opera at the top and choose 'Select All' from the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.
NOTE:
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click 'No' at the prompt.
Click 'Exit' on the Main menu to close the program.

Now Start SuperAntiSpyware.
On the main screen click on 'Scan your computer'.
Check: 'Perform Complete Scan'.
Click 'Next' to start the scan.

Superantispyware will now scan your computer, when it's finished it will list all/any infections found.
Make sure everything found has a checkmark next to it,then press 'Next'.
Click on 'Finish' when you've done.

It's possible that the program will ask you to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
Click on 'Preferences'.
Click on the 'Statistics/Logs' tab.
Under 'Scanner Logs' double click on 'SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log'.
It will then open in your default text editor, such as Notepad.
Copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply.
Also post a new Hijackthis log,let me know how your pc is running now.

I've installed and executed ATF Cleaner.

I am currently running the Super Anti-Virus Scan, and by the looks of it, it will take several hours to complete. I have three hard discs, and the scanner hasn't finished the smallest one yet (it's been an hour). I'll probably just let the scanner run overnight and post the results for you tomorrow morning, if that is alright.

I really appreciate your help, and I also appreciate how good your help is (in that the instructions and clear and concise). I've happily sent in a donation via your paypal link.

I've uninstalled combofix as you requested.

Here's the results of the scan, and a new HJT log. The C:\SpywareRemoval\Makkahsoft directory is where I initially installed HJT (before going to your website). I had also renamed HJT to "makkahsoft".

I've noticed that I can't access the 3D windows screensavers anymore. I receive an error message stating, "The application has failed to start because d3d8.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." My computer is an exact copy of my boss's computer, so I imagine I can just retrieve the dll from there. Please let me know if I am in error.

Besides that minor issue, everything else seems to be working properly. Thanks again for all of your help.

Out of curiosity, what's so special about combofix that it was able to remove the files that killbox, sdfix, hjt, and commercial virus scanners could not remove?

There is little information posted for public viewing in regards to this tool and many other specialized fix tools.
We don't want the bad guys to see or know how everything we use works, better just leave it at that.

I can't find any info at all regarding the file d3d8p.dll.
The file appears to be malware related, where do these 3D windows screensavers come from, any particular program.

I believe the screensavers come with a default Windows XP installation.
The screensavers I'm referring to are 3D Text, 3D FlowerBox, 3D Pipes, etc.

The file d3d8p.dll was part of the malware, but I think there is a legitimate d3d8.dll (no P) that is part of Microsoft's Direct3d application. I'm guessing that either the virus deleted it, or I accidentally removed it while trying to remove the virus.

First enable the viewing of hidden files and folders, reverse the process once you've done below:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-see-hidden-files-in-windows/

Copy d3d8.dll from C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache to C:\WINDOWS\system32 then reboot.

Let me know how it goes.

You're welcome

Please do the following to finish off:

In the window that appears, enter a description\name for the Restore Point, then click on 'Create',wait, then click 'Close'.
The date and time will be created automatically.

Next click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.
The 'Select Drive' box will appear, click on Ok.
The 'Disk Cleanup for [C:]' box will appear, click on the 'More Options' tab.
At the bottom in the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Clean up...' button.
A box will pop up 'Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?',click on 'Yes'.

Ok, I cleared my old restore points and created a new one.

Thanks again Richie, you're a real lifesaver.
