Hi,

I must have gotten to a bad page somewhere because I have been infected with a few different things?

First of all there is a new toolbar when I open up Internet Explorer and it automatically redirects to a page to download some antivirus software. Also, there are warnings popping up on the toolbar about once every minute. I also get some pop up messages telling me my computer is infected and to click OK to download software. I also get C++ runtime error messages for programs that I am not running (knowingly). Whatever I have also has shut down windows explorer on me (I think) a few times - start button, taskbar, all desktop icons disappear etc... I haven't clicked on any of these warnings and as a precaution I haven't logged into anything important on this computer.

I Ran Adaware and Spybot and found several things that I tried to fix but I'm pretty sure it didn't work. Spybot found win32.small.azl which it looks like may have downloaded several new goodies I didn't want.

I ran PandaScan and found this:

Please let me know what to do next.

Thanks in Advance

Hello,

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.

Hello,

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Esmc] "C:\WINDOWS\SSEMBL~1\dexplore.exe" -vt yazb

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Please download WinHelp2002's DelDomains by right-clicking on the following link, and choosing "Save Target As":
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Save the file to the desktop. Then go to the desktop, right click on DelDomains.inf, and choose Install. You may not see any noticeable changes or prompts; this is normal. Then please restart your computer, and post a new HijackThis log.

How is it running now?

Thanks,
tea

My computer seems to be running better now, but when I restart windows I get an error message 3x saying that Symantec Active Scan has failed to load. It was working fine before I got infected so I'm not sure why it is doing that now.

Please let me know what I need to do next.

Thanks again for your help!

Hello,

I would either contact Norton, or first try uninstalling it, then reinstalling it.

The following are not malware, but fixing them with HijackThis will improve your system's speed. None are necessary at startup, and may be started manually at any time. This is up to you.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Persistence] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Client Access Service] "C:\Program Files\IBM\Client Access\cwbsvstr.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Client Access Help Update] "C:\Program Files\IBM\Client Access\cwbinhlp.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Client Access Check Version] "C:\Program Files\IBM\Client Access\cwbckver.exe" LOGIN
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acrobat Assistant 8.0] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Acrotray.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Global Startup: Help Update.lnk = C:\FSH95L\gp00\bin\xfer95L.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked"

Now reboot a time or two and see if it's quicker. Let me know how you come out with Norton.

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

No, nothing else.....is it running a bit faster? My only concern is Norton, but I don't think anybody but Norton can fix that if a simple uninstall/reinstall doesn't get it.

If there are no further problems:

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care!
