Posted 09 December 2007 - 05:18 PM

My computer became infected with several types of things that do not seem to be completely deleted or cleaned by any of the various system scans i have done
One common thing that my McAfee firewall is repeatedly detecting and removing is the Vundo trojan, which i assume is a result from a trojan downloader that is difficult to remove
I'll still get random pop-ups when online and i usually get redirected from my homepage to a random ad site when using Internet Explorer
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Here is my log:

Hi,

First of all.. I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then, I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Download ComboFix from here.
**Save it to your desktop**

In case you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

* Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Note - Your internet connection will be terminated while ComboFix runs. Do Not attempt to re-enable it. Should ComboFix terminate prematurely, restart the computer to restore connectivity.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".

When finished and after reboot (in case it rebooted), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Hello,

Thank you very much for the help i really appreciate it.

Now i followed the directions including disabling TeaTimer, installing ResetTeaTimer.bat, and removing viewpoint

However I'm having problems with Combofix, the program runs through all the completed stages until it gets to a point where it says "Deleting Files/Folders" and doesn't go anywhere from there. I never clicked on the screen and I disabled my McAfee software including the virus scan and all other scans on my computer before running it.

The first time i ran Combofix i experienced this problem and had it running all night thinking it was just taking awhile. In the morning i saw it was still in the same position so i restarted my computer and re-downloaded the program and ran it again, this time however the program did not terminate my internet connection as it had done the first time and was still gettin stuck at the same point.

What am i doing wrong???

Hi,

You're not doing something wrong. It's a small issue with Combofix, but it has been updated now. So delete the Combofix.exe you are currently having and redownload the new version from the same link I posted previously.
Then run it and post the logs.

Hello,

I ran the Combo fix program and this time it worked except no log appears after my computer reboots

The only thing i got was a zip file on my desktop named "catchme" that i unzipped and had a dll file but no combofix.txt, is the file in another folder somewhere in my hard-drive?

Can you post a new HijackThislog please?

Also look if there's a combofix.txt created on your C:\

Hi,

First of all, please uninstall AdwareAlert via sofware > add/remove programs, because this is a so called Spywareremover with a questionable reputation.

Then reboot.

After reboot,

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\AdwareAlert Scheduled Scan.job
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cgxvlagj.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nohcvshg.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mcrh.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mhxhmpgm.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vwgqqmub.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pubctqfg.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\euhrdorn.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ahxkjvsh.ini
C:\WINDOWS\sawkip.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ddkret.dll

Folder::
C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert
C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny\Application Data\AdwareAlert
C:\VundoFix Backups

DirLook::
C:\WINDOWS\Erroror

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\ddcbyvu]

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Hi,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O1 - Hosts: 66.98.148.65 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.148.65 auto.search.msn.es
O2 - BHO: (no name) - @49E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BitTorrent] "C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\bittorrent.exe" --force_start_minimized

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Go to this page.
Enter the url of this thread in the first field.
Where it says, browse to the file that you want to submit, click the browse button next to it and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\Erroror\user.ini

Select it and click ok:
Then click the Send File button below.

Then * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Hi,

Everything seems better now, ive only noticed recently though that my computer doesn't respond sometimes when i try to shut down/stand by/log off.

My internet connection goes in and out sometimes as well...

This is most probably caused by your McAfee. Many are having this issue. So to figure out, uninstall McAfee and install another Antivirus and Firewall instead. Look in my signature below for the ones I recommend. Please do not install multiple Antivirus and Firewalls... so make sure McAfee is uninstalled, you rebooted and then install a new Antivirus.

By the way, please uninstall Ewido, because you are using an outdated version. It is AVG Antispyware now.
And I am also pretty sure that you are also having an outdated version of Spysweeper. If you didn't purchase Spysweeper, please uninstall it since it won't protect you.

And read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Happy Surfing again!
