Hello,

Thankyou in advance for any assistance you can offer me. I've had an infection of (what appears to be) AVSystemCare. I'm not sure it's the full blown thing but I keep getting popups every 4-5 minutes stating (complete with spelling mistakes)

"WINDOWS SECURITY ALERT

Warning! Potential Spyware Operation!

Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system and Internet files. Run full scan now to pervent any unathorised access to your files! Click YES to download spyware remover... "

It tells me to click yes to download a spyware remover which of course I don't do! I have accidentally clicked yes once or twice when I've been working when the popup appears and it takes me to a site saying that I need to pay for and download AVSystemCare in order to remove my infection, because I'm going to do that!
The infection also blocks me out of Control panel, Task manager, Add or Remove Programs, Time and Date panel, Registry editor etc. by removing my administrator rights (I am the only user by the way).

So far I have tried: AVG Anti-Virus, AVG Anti-Spyware, AdAware SE Personal, Spybot S&D (These were all installed on my PC prior to infection), Stopzilla, XoftSpy SE, RogueRemover FREE (All free scans not the full programs), SUPERAntiSpyware, a-squared Free. Also I have followed all of the instructions on the "Preparation before posting a HiJackThis Log" post and run online scans through Symantec, Panda Anti-virus and TrendMICRO Housecall.
Some of them have found the odd tracking cookie or medium risk threat and removed them accordingly but none of them have found or been able to remove this problem.

The Hijack this log that was run after all of these scans is shown below.

Thankyou again for any help you can give.

Hi,

* Download ComboFix from here.
**Save it to your desktop**

In case you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

* Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Note - Your internet connection will be terminated while ComboFix runs. Do Not attempt to re-enable it. Should ComboFix terminate prematurely, restart the computer to restore connectivity.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".

When finished and after reboot (in case it rebooted), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Thankyou for the reply, I'm not sure if it helps with the problem at all but yesterday AVG AntiSpyware detected two files called timoty.exe and msanton.exe when it updated which it quarantined, it could just be temporary but I haven't had a popup so far this morning.

Ok here's the Combofix log you asked for:

ComboFix 07-12-12.3 - Richard 2007-12-14 10:40:13.3 - NTFSx86

Hi,

I'm not sure if it helps with the problem at all but yesterday AVG AntiSpyware detected two files called timoty.exe and msanton.exe when it updated which it quarantined, it could just be temporary but I haven't had a popup so far this morning.

Yes, that were indeed the files responsible for this infection.

Please navigate to and delete next file if still present:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\setings.exe

Then,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dc] "C:\PROGRA~1\fCoder\DESKTO~1.0\dc.exe" /hide
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dumprep] C:\WINDOWS\system32\spools.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [froody] C:\WINDOWS\system32\timoty.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
By the way, did you set the policy to block automatic Windows updates? If you didn't...

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_USERS\.default\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
"NoWindowsUpdate"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Post a new HijackThislog in your next reply.
