We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us.
The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP.

Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

Click HERE. Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Install all critical updates except Service Pack 2.
Some hijacks interfere with the installation of Service Pack 2, so please wait until your computer is clean before installing it.

Of course I got an error - "The Product Key to install Windows is invalid".

Am I completely out of luck? I dont know what to do with this thing anymore - getting extremely frustrated with the whole situation. Advice?

So I tried to do a little research on the "product key" error. Looks like I have an "pirated" copy of windowsXP, however I bought my computer from someone who installed everything and put together what I think is a good package. So I do not think is true, but who knows for sure?!

Unfortunately the guy is no longer employed by the company I bought it from and on top of that has moved away. At one time I had the original XP disk and installation guide - but in the process from moving to and from college - can no longer find it anywhere. I have found the Product ID number (if that means anything?) or I have a really OLD Windows 98 CD. Oh boy!

Sounds like you have an illegal, pirated or cracked version of XP on your computer.

I cant help you if you are using illegal, pirated or cracked software.

Best to call MicroSoft and talk to them, as they can get you straight.

Is there anyway to downgrade back to the 98 version just so I have a computer that works for the time being? I don't want the items I do have on it to be destroyed or damaged but right now I cannot afford to purchase anything like XP or a someone else to fix it.

No. http://support.microsoft.com/w98

Effective July 11, 2006, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me (and their related components) will transition to a non-supported status. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide any incident support options or security updates. Microsoft is not offering a custom support agreement for these products.

I don't want the items I do have on it to be destroyed or damaged but right now I cannot afford to purchase anything like XP or a someone else to fix it.

You should have thought of all this before you installed the cracked, illegal or pirated version of XP.
If your sure you have a legal version then contact Microsoft and they will walk you though the fix.

If you know you have a cracked, illegal or pirated version, then buy a legal version of XP and install it. Installing the legal version will not destroy your computer.

As I said in my previous message I cant help you if you are using illegal, pirated or cracked software!

"You should have thought of all this before you installed the cracked, illegal or pirated version of XP."

As I had said before the person who would have installed it has moved - I was unaware of it being a pirated version so I am a little offended by your last post.

I have heard good things about your service and understand why you can not help me. I wil contact Microsoft.
