Whenever I let my Laptop run Windows update it fails when installing "Windows Update Software 7.0.6000.381"

1. When I first open WU and check the summary it tells me that

Most Recent Check For Updates - 18/8/07
Updates Were Installed - 24/11/07

Then I click on "Check for Updates"

2. In the next window "Install New Windows Update Software"

Click on "Install Now"

3. Next Window "Windows cannot check for updates"

Click to see how to fix the problem and check for updates.

This takes you back to Para 1. above and then it just keeps looping.

When I have done this a few times I eventually get an an error code "WindowsUpdate_800F081F WindowsUpdate_dt000" but I get no help following the links to the update support page(s).

I have tried the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles to no avail.

When I view the update history it tells me that Windows Update Software 7.0.6000.381 is always failing...... Why is this?

Please can someone help me with this problem.

I am running Windows Vista Home basic

Thanking you in anticipation

I'm having the same problem updating the following:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

Installation date: ‎12/‎16/‎2007 3:04 AM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code E0434F4D

Update type: Important

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 resolves various issues found after the initial release of .NET Framework 1.1. These include both security- and non-security-related issues. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

The links have not been very helpful at all.

Any ideas why this would fail?

Thank you,
