A question my friend tried installing a drive with XP on it (came from an emachine he bought.
Tried to put it into a machine that had ME. All he gets is a black screen with a white line across it. Is it incompatible or something.
How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

I would take a guess driver incompatability. Everything from, video, to who knows what. Mostly the drivers having to do with motherboard. You also might have some BIOS issues. I did on an older one.

If they had a removable BIOS chip you could send it out for a flash, but then the question is, how much of an upgrade. It would be best to do it incrementaly. A few versions at a time. It's usually best to do it one at a time. If they just want a spare computer to play with there's always Linux. I've even have my wife playing around with it

Yeah they really just want it to surf, store some pix and music. Linux may be the best idea.

XP, unlike 98 is very untolerant of hardware changes.
6 major hardware changes only before it barfs

Run a repair XP install
That should take care of it
In the beginning there was the command line.

you'll need the following.

the XP cd
the XP coa that was used on that system. the actual coa, and you have to keep it now.
if you can't get the COA, then this is a piracy issue.
