Hello Trevor,

You know, you really shouldn't run with scissors like that.

Please print these instructions or copy them to Notepad (or another word processor), and save it for easier reference. This is because we will be in Safe Mode during the fix and you won’t be able to access the Internet to view these instructions.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition and save that file to your desktop.

This is a 30-day trial of the program -- This means that after 30 days the "background guard" protection will be de-activated. However, this version can continue to be manually updated and used as an on-demand scanner forever.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the setup program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need to run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen select the "Update" icon, then under the "Manual update" section click the "Start update" button.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed (the progress bar will display "Update successful!") select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the "Settings" screen:
    • Click on "Recommended actions" -> select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports:" -> select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Please do NOT run a scan yet!
Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but just before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, reboot the computer and try again.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the "Safe Mode" menu item, and then press "Enter".
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5BAB4B5B-68BC-4B02-94D6-2FC0DE4A7897} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {0000000A-9980-0010-8000-00AA00389B71} -
O16 - DPF: {00000162-9980-0010-8000-00AA00389B71} -
O18 - Protocol: AutorunsDisabled - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Then please run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab. Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select the "Apply all actions" button, AVG Anti-Spyware will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Next select the "Save Report" button at the bottom.
    • Then select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand corner of the screen and save it as a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important!).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system normally into Windows. Please post the contents of the AVG Anti-Spyware report in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
How is it running now please?

Thanks,
tea

Yes, It is running alittle faster. I have a broadband connection and sometimes the page will freeze and say: (example) "waiting for www.bleepingcomputer.com" and will do nothing until I stop the page and try again (sometimes it will take 2 or 3 times before it will finally load the page).

Hello,

Is it all sites that do that? Or just Bleepers? I ask because it happens to me too, and I have DSL.......sometimes the site just lags a little.

I notice that you do not seem to be running Antivirus software. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. That's why I want you to install one!!

AVG, Avira OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

Let me know.

Thanks,
tea

It is all sites. I did have AVG but it never finds anything. I tried several others and the same thing, nothing. I have Spybot, CCleaner, Spysweeper, and HJT. I thought the "laggyness" was my firewall from sygate, so I switched it and now running Jetico firewall (free of course). Seems to be doing fine. I will download AVG again and keep it on here per your request. And yes, I know not to run two anitvirus programs or firewalls at once. Thanks for your help Teacup!

Yes everything is clean. I use Sybot S&D to check the registry every once in awhile and let it fix issues. Is this OK? Maybe it's time to update to a new computer! lol.

DELL 2400
Windows XP Home SP2
2.4 ghz running at 2.39
1 GB ram (this is all it will hold!)
Nvdia FX 5500

NO PCI E slots
NO AGP slots

Had this computer for little over 3 years now!

You seem pretty knowledgeable

Well thanks! I have learned most of my knowledge from BC!! Thanks again!
Would you recommend a site or something for parts for this dell? Good Mothersboards, Processors, things like (cheap please)! Haven't built my own computer but getting to the point where it will be the cheapest way and also for the knowledge.

Thanks Tea!

Hi,

I'm going to send you to the first forum I ever signed up at....you're in for a treat judging by what you've just said!

I'll encourage you to run the Full Tests at PCPitstop. http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
This is an excellent diagnostics scan that may help in determining problems not related to malware. If you need help interpreting the results, you can either post back here with the Tech Express link, or have someone in the User to User forum help you out. Have a look around the forums, and you can ask around there for the parts you want, or hardware advice. I built this computer I use now using the knowledge I picked up just by hanging around there.

Let me know how you come out.

Thanks for the link. My system isn't that bad. Had to update my video drivers, but everything else is minor stuff.

Yes, I did and they actually made a difference. Not waiting so long for the pages to come up now. Had ALOT of unnecessary crap going on here. lol

Thanks again Tea!

Happy Holidays!

WOW, I have been going through Pitstops forums about building a computer. All I can say is "WOW." Alot of things going on to build a computer myself. Just reading about it makes me nauseous! sol (screaming out load!) Might just have a computer built by someone who knows what they are doing.
