Last night I had a message come up from my spy sweeper saying that a trojan was trying to install. I tried blocking it but it came up 3 or 4 times. All of a sudden it went to a scan and found 3 infected files: virtumonde, internet speed monitor, and torjan.gen. I tried setting a restore point in safe mode but it wouldnt let me do anything before the probelms began. When I went to restart my computer all the icons, start menu and desktop toolbar disappeared. Now every few seconds my desktop goes blank and all I can see is the wallpaper. It is almost like it is booting up and the system keeps flashing back and forth between the blank desktop and the one with my icons and toolbar, etc. Also a kodak easyshare poppup menu keeps flashing across my screen, only i do not own a kodak easy share and when i went ot the control panel to remove the program, it wouldnt let me. The internet and all programs work, i was able to download and run adawrae and spybot. They found infected files and were supposed to remove them but the problem still persists. Also, one of them said that a windows security update and been changed recently and I didnt change anything.

The hijack logfile is as follows:

Hello atoro82,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

Thank you so much! I will do that when I get home from work today and send the logfile your way!
Is this a trojan or virus that is common? What exactly is the problem and how did I get it?

Hello,

You have a Vundo infection, and you could have gotten it through the old versions of Java, which are vulnerable to it. There could be other ways, but that's the most obvious to me right now. I'll be waiting for the reports.

Regards,
tea

What do I do next and how can I prevent this from happening again? Ive tried updating my java script and it wont let me for some reason. I tried months ago.

Also, will all these new programs, ad-aware, spy bot, hijackthis conflict with my trend micro anti-virus and spwy sweeper?
Ho can I set up a personalized firewall?

Oh and I was reading soemthing that if you have windows xp, which I do, I may want to shut off the system restore until the virus is removed. Is that true? I wont do anything until yuo tell me, but I just wanted to check.

Hello,

Looks good!

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE <---this is a resource hog!
O20 - Winlogon Notify: iifffde - iifffde.dll (file missing)

Reboot your computer.

Your Java is way out of date, which leaves your computer vulnerable.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

but how can it make a clean restore point?

By creating a fresh restore point, all the old/bad restore points are deleted, thus getting rid of any infected files that might be in there.

I may want to shut off the system restore until the virus is removed. Is that true?

NO! If you turn it off like that, then if something goes wrong at any point, you have nothing to go back to. Better a dirty restore point than none at all.

Also, will all these new programs, ad-aware, spy bot, hijackthis conflict with my trend micro anti-virus and spwy sweeper?

They should not. : HijackThis for sure, since it's only used to diagnose problems. There is no kind of protection within it.

Ho can I set up a personalized firewall?

Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

how can I prevent this from happening again?

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Let me know how it all goes, and how it's running. :)

Thanks,
tea
