need some help w/my old IBM laptop. it is a 5 year old IBM Thinkpad R40 running XP w/SP1.

i keep getting a pop-up from Messenger Service saying:

CRITICAL ERROE MESSAGE! - REGISTRY DAMAGED AND CORRUPTED.

to FIX this problem:
Open Inernet Explorer andt type www.registerycleanerxp.com
Once you load the webpage, close this message window

After you intstall the cleaner program you will not receive any more reminders or pop-ups like this.

VISIT www.registrycleanerxp.com IMMEDIATLY!

doest seem 100% legit to me but i want it to go away.

any tips?

i am using IE6.

i was on here before trying to fix some issues with this machine and we fixed it enough to run better. however, at the time it was our only computer and my wife needed it for school and i was unable to finish everything we were doing. now it is our backup computer and i have access to it all the time now.

i had to get a new account because i foolishly tried to remember my password rather than click the forgot password link.

Do the pop up advertisements look like the one in the example shown here? If so, it indicates your system is not secure and you should follow the instructions to "Disable Windows Messenger Service". The Messenger service is a network-based system notification service service that transmits net send messages and messages that are sent through the Alerter service between client computers and servers. It should not be confused with Windows Messenger which is a proprietary instant messaging client included in Windows XP, 2000 and 2003 Server.
