I own a PC about 2 years old, it has XP sp2, anti virus and some rootkits on it.

Due to the hassels with interpreting results from Anti-Virus and Firewall etc, im thinking it might be easier to switch to some linux distro than learn to make XP more secure. The major catch is Im a gamer and love mods. Im considering taking up consoles

I also am called upon to help with housemates computer, we share the one internet connection.

She is very trusting and uses the windows live Chat application and doesn't get why strangers want to add her to contact lists even when I explain, albeit in vague terms about viruses and trogans.

She likes to stick with what she knows and is extremly unmotivated to adapt or learn new ways of doing things.

I will ask specific questions dedicated posts

Welcome to BC!
I would certainly urge you to discuss the viability of Linux for computer gaming before switching.
Regards,
John
