This weekend I ran into a couple of trojans. I went to a website I found on google and it told me I had to download flash to make it work. The next thingI know I am at my google page only it has porn images. I also got a popup that told me I was infected and to download spyhunter3 to get rid of it. I googled the program and the website review said they were legit so I downloaded it. Big mistake, then I got something called smitfraud. I found your site using another computer and followed your instructions. Here is my HJT log

Hello rob morris,

Click on the Start Menu button.
Click on the Control Panel option.
Double-click on the Add or Remove Programs icon.
Find the entry for IE Defender and double-click on it to uninstall the program.
Follow the prompts to uninstall the program and reboot the computer.

*****************************

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

*****************************

Reconfigure Windows Vista to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
Access Control Panel.
Click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

*****************************

1. With all other applications and Windows closed, open HijackThis, System Scan only. Checkmark these items:

O2 - BHO: Video DivX 3.12 - {7A23A1E8-B2AB-4C50-AD12-9E19B747E17C} - C:\Windows\System32\sysdivx.dll

Click "Fix checked" and when the log panel clears exit HijackThis.

2. Follow the instructions and download FixIEDef from here: http://www.malwareteks.com/FixIEDef.php

Tip of the hat to ShadowPuterDude for the little removal utility.

Unzip the file to a folder, FixIEDef to your Desktop.
Open the new folder.
Right-click on FixIEDef.bat to run the application "As an Administrator".
It does call Regedit.exe to remove registry additions made by IE Defender.
so if asked approve the registry changes.

Reboot when it finishes. (It will only take a few moments to run).
Delete the original download, and delete the folder it created.

3. Post a brand new HijackThis log when finished.

Hi Rob,

Lets have a look and see where it may be.

Open HijackThis 2.0.2
Press the button 'View Misc Tools Section'
Press the button 'open uninstall manager'
Press the button 'save list'
Save it to your desktop.
Press Save. Save it your desktop.
A notepad file will open.

Hi Rob,

Looks like IE Defender is not there, but no matter we have some more stuff to get rid of.

Uninstall these two versions of Java, as malware can still use them.
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Then disable your registry protectors Spyware Doctor, windows defender

To disable Spyware Doctor from running on your system startup:
1. First, disable the OnGuard Tools. This way, when you exit Spyware Doctor, these tools won't stay resident in the background.
2. Click the "Settings" button on the left side.
3. Click the "Startup Settings" link.
4. Uncheck "Run at Windows Startup".
5. Click the "Apply" button.

To disable Windows Defender
Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender. After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Now continue with the rest of the fix.

SifuMike,

There is no entry in HJT for:

O2 - BHO: Video DivX 3.12 - {7A23A1E8-B2AB-4C50-AD12-9E19B747E17C} - C:\Windows\System32\sysdivx.dll

Should I continue with the rest of the repair?
