Hi,

Would you please analyze my HJT log, below?

I performed following steps:

1. Ran Norton antivirus with latest definitions.
2. Ran CWShredder and removed a hidden .dll (but it came right back, following a reboot).
3. Ran SpyBot 1.2 and removed several items.
4. Ran Ad-aware 6.0 and removed several items.
5. Ran CCleaner v1.17.090.
6. Ran HijackThis v1.99.1.

I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks!

You have a Horseserver infection which requires some tools to get rid of.
  • First, download HSFix from here
  • After it is downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop called "HSFix" and extract all the files into the newly created folder.
  • Next, download CleanUp! Install it, but do not run it yet.
  • Boot into safe mode: Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  • Locate the HSFix folder on your desktop, open it, and double-click "hsfix.bat"
  • A log will be produced which you can close out of.
  • Then run HijackThis again, close any open windows and browsers and fix these:
    HJT items here
  • Run CleanUp! and let it clean your computer of temp files. Decline when it asks you to log off.
  • Restart your computer into normal mode and run at least one of the following free, online virus scans:
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm
    http://www3.ca.com/threatinfo/virusinfo/scan.aspx
  • Restart your computer one last time and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the HSFix log which is located at C:/hslog.txt

Thanks for the instructions, Grinler.

Before I perform the steps, I don't understand which HJT items I should delete. (You wrote "HJT items here" ... was this a placeholder for items that you intended to copy into that spot?)

Thanks again, Andy

Thanks, Grinler ...

I did your complete loop twice, as I still had stuff remaining after one time.

Now it seems nearly fixed. Ad-aware, SpyBot, CWShredder, Trendmicro online scan, and Computer Assoc's eTrust online scan all report that I'm clean, even after reboots.

BUT there are still two symptoms:
- After a reboot, I just got a message from Microsoft Internet Explorer saying it has encountered a problem and needs to close. (But I hadn't opened IE! So is there some application in the background that is trying incorrectly to open it?)
- Panda Online still reports I have two infected items. (1) "Adware: Adware/SearchAid", consisting of a file c:\windows\dict.dat and (2) "Adware: Adware/MyCustomIE", consisting of a Windows Registry item. Panda says it cannot fix these.

The HSFix log (from the second loop effort) and the latest HJT log (from after all repairs) are copied below.

What is the next step?

Thanks, Andy

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

O4 - Startup: winupdate64743899[1].exe

C:\WINDOWS\blank.htm
winupdate64743899[1].exe <-- search for and delete this file.

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode> I then want you to run HSFix again and post a new hjt log and hsfix log

OK, did those steps. HJT did not show the four R1 entries or the one 04 entry when it ran in safe mode ... so I was able to delete just the one 02 entry. I did everything else as you instructed. When I ran HJT again in normal mode after the reboot, then the four R1 entries came back ... so they still exist on the log below.

What next? Logs are below. Thanks.

Andy

OK, I fixed the four 04 entries by running HJT in Windows normal mode. Then ran HJT again and its log is posted below. I also ran HSFix again, and it is clean.

Trendmicro online scan, Computer Assoc's eTrust online scan, and my installed Norton antivirus all report no problems.

But Panda's online scan shows two infection items remain:
- "Adware: Adware/SearchAid", consisting of a file c:\windows\dict.dat
- "Adware: Adware/CWS.Oslogo", consisting of a Windows Registry item.
Panda online says it cannot fix these. Since the second item seems related to CoolWeb at least by name, I ran CWShredder ... and it is clean. Do these items require manual registry modifications?

Thanks again, Andy

Yeah its possible you may have to manually remove the reg entry. Also for the file in question, check its properties and make sure its not read only. If it is uncheck read only and delete it
