Hi, For two weeks now I've been infected with the Trojan Vundo Virus. It was a complete mess, the first day but I used Atribune Vundo fix like the tutorial said I should. The signs that I've been infected by a blackworm and so forth, the obvious signs of vundo were gone. But I used Norton, Trend Micro House Scan, and Panda and discovered there were still more infected files that could not be removed. I have downloaded Webroot Spysweeper, Lavasoft Ad-Ware, Bitdefender, McAfee, and so forth. They didn't work, the results of scans showed nothing or I had to pay to remove the infected files or the program could not remove the infected files or the program removed the infected files but it kept on showing up in the scans. Norton 360 for a while in the scan results, showed nothing but then suddenly started telling me my computer was infected with vundo. I downloaded SuperAntiSpyware, the free verison and there were 83 objects that were either the vundo virus, virtumonde virus, adware, or spyware. I just recently deleted my old verison of Java and updated. The sytem is working alot better but there are still popups and my firewall keeps on detecting/stopping changes being made to this browser toolbar I didn't even ad and so I don't think it's clean yet. I'm at my wit's end, ready to break down. Please help. Thank you.

Here's my HijackThis log.

Hello glassman153,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

I clicked scan for combo fix after downloading it and it completly messed up my computer. It made worst. It suddenly froze and I didn't click it or anything. Fed up, I took out the battery and tried to reboot it but I'm failing each time. It says a certain windows file is either missing or corrupted. What should I do/ Can I do at this point?

Hello,

Can you reboot like you're going to go to safe mode, then choose "Last Known Good Configuration"?

I tried that too both safe mode and Last Known Good Configuration. It won't work either. =(

Still says a certain windows file is missing/corrupted.

Is system restore the best option at this point sadly or do I have other options ? If system restore is my only choice, is there a inexpensive and easy way I can retrieve the data such as microsoft word, microsoft exe, files, and etc. off my harddrive? Or are they corrupted from the vundo/virtumonde virus that I wasn't quite sure were destroyed.

If you can do a system restore, then go for it. Do you have the disk? You could also do a repair install. I don't understand what happened. ComboFix should not have caused that. I haven't seen anyone else that's it's happened to, but I will look into it to be sure.

Regards,
tea

In some of the other topics I read that were posted here, I heard some warnings about using Combofix. I might have not read the directions carefully? But I'm pretty sure I did everything right. But I'm no computer expert.
Disk? I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. A repair install?

Is there any way I can save my data before restoring it? Because I'm not quite sure how I can save my data when windows is like this.

There's a lot of data such as reports, essays, Microsoft and Excel documents that are important.

Yes, I do have the XP disk. It's a dell reinstallation CD for Microsoft XP for service pack 2. But how do I use it to do a repair install? Just pop it in?

I won't lose any data?

This is what specifally my laptop says each time I try to restart it in safe mode, normal mode, or last know good configuration:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\System32\config\system

What I really want you to do then, since you have a disk is go to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk using the /f command so it'll fix what's wrong. If you have problems with this, refer to this page: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...k.mspx?mfr=true

Of course, let me know how you come out.

I went to recovery console to start repair and it says:

1: C:/Windows
2: F:/Windows

However, I can't select any option. I can only type character and I tried C and F and I tried 1 and 2. What should I do?

I went to chkdsk and it keeps on asking me if I want to check the volume and type in /p if I want to. But everytime I type it, it says command not recognized. What should I do? I tried everything.

Hello,

I have to be away for just a little while, so please don't panic. I'll get back as soon as I can. I've been here since early this morning already and I need to do some things here.

No problem. I understand you have a life besides being on the computer 24/7 all the time helping other people. I'm running chkdsk c: / R now. It's going smoothly so far?

UPDATED:

I ran chkdsk c: / R before chkdsk c:/ P, it finished and everytime I exit out of there, It keeps on saying the same thing: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\system32/config\SYSTEM

I tried using the CD, what should I do now? Do you have any specifc instructions on how to use the CD?

That really should work.....how is it going?

I have a question, please. I know you said this happened around the time of ComboFix, but did you by chance also download Windows updates?
