Hello,

First, PLEASE re enable System Restore if you haven't already!! If something goes wrong at any time, then you won't have anything to go back to, and you then have a very expensive door stop. Better a dirty restore point than none at all, right?

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please print these instructions or copy them to Notepad (or another word processor), and save it for easier reference. This is because we will be in Safe Mode during the fix and you won’t be able to access the Internet to view these instructions.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition and save that file to your desktop.

This is a 30-day trial of the program -- This means that after 30 days the "background guard" protection will be de-activated. However, this version can continue to be manually updated and used as an on-demand scanner forever.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the setup program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need to run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen select the "Update" icon, then under the "Manual update" section click the "Start update" button.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed (the progress bar will display "Update successful!") select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the "Settings" screen:
    • Click on "Recommended actions" -> select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports:" -> select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Please do NOT run a scan yet!
Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but just before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, reboot the computer and try again.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the "Safe Mode" menu item, and then press "Enter".
Then please run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab. Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select the "Apply all actions" button, AVG Anti-Spyware will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Next select the "Save Report" button at the bottom.
    • Then select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand corner of the screen and save it as a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important!).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system normally into Windows. Please post the contents of the AVG Anti-Spyware report in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
Please also let me know how it's running.

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

Well there's one of your problems right there----> F:\My Downloads\APPLICATIONS\Windows XP Stuff\XP Keygen.exe -> Trojan.Small.edz : Cleaned with backup (quarantined). There's nothing in your log, and you're running an illegal OS. What do you expect?? All I can suggest is that you clean it up, uninstall everything you don't use, defrag it, etc.....and get a legit XP disk.

Regards,
tea

Dear Tea,

Thanks for your help with looking through the logs.
I am still getting serious lag from the windows screen to the log on screen (about 1.5 minutes).

But by the way I am using a legal purchased from Newegg Windows XP Pro.
I have the receipt and the box (along with the cert sticker).
I have been using the validation tool since I installed (reason I went legite).

Therefore, please explain to me how you came to the determination that I am running an illegal copy and what I should do about it.

Appreciate all your help.

Profstolte

A keygen is a keygen...you had to download it from somewhere. I pointed out the exact entry. I see you've been to The Pit.....did you run the full tests? Do you have the Tech Express link?

Dear Tea,

I looked at the entry you reffered to.
Those were data files I had on my previous computer, transfered over before I wiped and rebuilt it ligit for my now X.
This is my new 'puter (not real new by today's standards) and it is ligit.
I used to try and fudge, too much work for very little gain. I pay for the right stuff now.

The Pit, used it test my builds (built about a dozen for other people, and I make them pay for ligit too).
I was recently using it to try and find out what was wrong with this one. Still don't know.
And yup ran the full tests. Nothing out of the ordinary (except the dial up of death - free and slow).
Don't think I have an express tech link, guess I don't know much about this part.

->Any suggestions to address the lag in between (solid black and no action for 1 to 1.5 minutes) the windows load screen (green bar and all) and the loggon screen (users)?

Thanks,

Profstolte

Good morning

I know what you mean. I built this system I use as my main, and it's right puny by today's standards! If you would go back to The Pit and run the full tests, we'll see if there's anything in there we can use. When they finish there should be a yucky yellow box in the upper right hand side, and at the bottom of that you should see Tech Express link. Click on that and you should get a link with a bunch of letters at the end. Post that here and I'll have a look if you like.

Dear Tea,

Nothing has really changed about the slow startup. And the reports from Pit indicate Vid card is at half. I swear that driver agent is scewy, I checked for all of them, none available. IE is fine. Been just running scans (Bit def found a few). And
I've been workin everything on vid card, stopped before stress tests or bios upgrade on the vid. Update any of driver that can be found for hardware. OS seems fine, just starting slow.

I wonder if I've goit a fatal in the OS, failing hardware, or god no! a scrape and fresh install coming down on me?

Any other suggestions?

Here's another pit:

Dear Teacup,

I think I found the problem.
I had a bus enumerator (device manager) that was making a whole bunch of stuff show up as non-plug and play devices.
A few uninstalls and reinstalls later the lag in loading time is gone.
I worked over the bios and the driver systems. And seems good and stable for now.
I do however have some irq sharing issues that may help improve PCIe speeds to the vid card.
Any suggestions on where to take up those issues on the BC forums?

sincerely,
profstolte

Hello,

There are forums here for Windows XP, as well as Hardware and Software. Any of those would be fine, I'm sure. There's some pretty talented folks over there, and you'll be in good hands. Be sure to give them the address of this thread so they can see what all you've done to this point.
