Problems With Os

For about a week, I've been noticing some rather strange behaviours from my system. First of all when I connect a removable disk (USB Flash Drive etc) and try to navigate through it with Windows explorer, the entire window disappears when I use the back arrow (Located at the top left corner) and the 'My Documents' window appears instead. Every icon on my desktop disappears leaving the desktop blank, the taskbar also disappears. The only way to revive all these would be to restart the system with Task Manager. Secondly, sometimes when I boot my system not all services start. My Avast antivirus icon is crossed with a red slash showing it is not active. The only way of activating it would be to use the repair option from the add/remove programs in control panel which doesnt work immediately after boot-up because the avast installation wizard simply doesnt respond until after some time whereas other installation wizards do respond; this is, in itself, a new developemnt. After repairing the installation, I would have to restart the avast antivirus service from services.msc before it works. When I look at the running processes with Task Manager only a few of them have entries under 'username', the rest are just blank, this is not normal. At first I thought it was a virus (especially with the popping up of 'My Documents' in explorer view) but avast doesnt report any virus and my regedit and folder options are still active, then I thought it was because my hard drive was getting filled up (1.45GB left), now I'm thinking maybe my registry is getting overloaded with entries or some serious changes were made to it. Just now, I tried rolling back my system with system restore but I just cant locate system restore from system tools, start menu. Any help in fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

That would be the impression I get also. That your system is infected. I would run hijack this and post the log in the appropriate section.
After you have followed all the steps suggested there.

Since it seems I better be careful not to mess your system up more than it allready is, then you best go there first.
