Hi,

I've been working on my parents' new computer this weekend on what seemed many infections and malware. I've followed the steps you recommended before posting the Hijackthis log, and it seems that there's one I can't get rid of. Nod32 always keeps popping up a message from an infiltration attempt. Here's a copy of one of the attempts:

Date and time Module Object Name Threat Action User Info
2007-11-25 14:23:20 IMON archive http://77.91.228.180/last-update/upd_cn.zip infiltrations multiples
mis en Quarantaine - connexion terminée XPSP2-A4BB6F3F3\Pierrette

All the online scans I did were successful but could not remove all the files that needed to be deleted. For example, House Call Antivirus wasn't able to remove a file named Troj_Agent.YTI.

In one of my many attempts to get rid of all this stuff, I read this might be a version of the Win32 Adware Agent that stills lingers on so I have no clue if that's the case or not. I just know that shortcuts keep being installed on the desktop and a Spybot warning always pops up saying there's a request to change the IE home page address (although this seems to have stopped since the last scan I did with the McAfee Avert Stinger).

Here's the HijackThis log:

I'm not used to all this technical language but I hope I was clear enough so you can help me fix this problem! Gotta go back home but I'll wait for developments and see what I can do when I come back on Thursday.

Thanks,

Hello Mel,

NOTE: If you have downloaded SmitfraudFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

Please download SmitfraudFix

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of the SmitfraudFix report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi SifuMike,

Thanks for the quick reply, stopped by my folks'place to apply your "recipe" to their computer and, so far, no new alerts have appeared from the antivirus program and no other events like the ones I described seem to be happening. As you said, I ran the new Smitfraudfix you posted in addition to the one I had already done. Is this one a newer version ? Just asking as I'm curious to know why it now seems to be working.

Here's the Smitfraud report:

Let me know what you see! Meanwhile I'll tell my parents to try surfing the net and see if anything starts acting weird again.

Thanks, I see light at the end of the tunnel!

Hi Mel,

As you said, I ran the new Smitfraudfix you posted in addition to the one I had already done. Is this one a newer version ? Just asking as I'm curious to know why it now seems to be working.

Yes, that is the newest version. Makes no sense in running an old version, as it will not remove anything.

SmitfraudFix is updated frequently so you should always delete the version you have on your computer (after you use it). That way you will be forced to download the latest version.

Please make sure that Word Wrap is turned OFF in Notepad before you copy and paste the HijackThis log here.
Take a look at the log you just posted. It's an eye killer
Please post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Hi Mel529,

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6A78E352-B1FA-4C18-9C48-96DD03979770} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

*******************************************

Next, we're going on a file hunt.
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files/folders in bold

C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE <==file

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot your computer, post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hi SifuMike,

Finally had a chance to follow the last steps you recommended. So far everything runs smoothly, no more pop-ups from Nod32 and attempts to change the IE home address.

I was wondering (for my personal knowledge) why you had me delete the exe file named ALCMTR.EXE ? It seemed to be related to Realtek audio so I'm curious.

Thanks !

Hi Mel529,

I was wondering (for my personal knowledge) why you had me delete the exe file named ALCMTR.EXE ? It seemed to be related to Realtek audio so I'm curious.

(Realtek AC97 Audio - Event Monitor) ALCMTR.EXE Spypware file used surreptitiously monitor one's actions. It is not a sinister one like remote control programs but it is being used by Realtek to gather data about customers

There is one item in your log that is being sticky

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6A78E352-B1FA-4C18-9C48-96DD03979770} - (no file)

so lets try to remove it.

Disable Teatimer because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.

Also disable your NOD32 antivirus while we run ComboFix.

Let's run ComboFix.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

If you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you have and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

Disconnect from the Internet while running ComboFix.

Temporarily disable any anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix  log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.
Do NOT run ComboFix more than once.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi SifuMike,

Here's the Combofix log followed by the HijackThis log. Seems the file you were referring to is still there, let me know what you think!

Hi Mel529,

Looks like you used the french version of CombFix.

Click Start, then Run and type Notepad and click OK.
Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{6A78E352-B1FA-4C18-9C48-96DD03979770}]

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Mel,

One items is being sticky, but it is not malware. We are only removing it for clean up.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key. If that does not work this go to this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6A78E352-B1FA-4C18-9C48-96DD03979770} - (no file)

Reboot your computer and post a fresh Hiajackthis log.

Hi again,

I booted in Safe mode and selected "fix checked" for the item O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6A78E352-B1FA-4C18-9C48-96DD03979770} - (no file). While I was still in safe mode, I scanned with HighjackThis again and the line had indeed disappeared. I then rebooted in normal mode and you'll see in the HighjackThis log below that this item is back...

Despite that I see the end is near so that's encouraging !

Mel
