Hey,

I am sorry, I made this thread in the forum "am I infected" and posted before I read that you couldn't post hijackthis logs. Which I guess I really need to do. So here is all the info that is in that one. I am pretty certain I am dealing with a malware/trojan situation. For the past 2 weeks about, my computer has been freezing on me. The mouse clicker stops in the middle of the screen, keyboard won't respond and control alt delete won't do it either. It would happen about 4 times a day at first. Okay, so that got me a little worried. Then, it starts happening more frequently, I browse a few forums, make a few posts. Some people say it could be viruses, some say hardware. Whatever. For the past two days now, it has really been freezing on me. This morning I woke up, and it wouldn't go on, it would sat on black screen forever when I booted it up(it froze overnight), or get to the windows screen and freeze instantaneoulsy. I scan the hell out of this lump of bleep. With every scanner possible. With avg I get the same weirdo tracking cookies everytime (do they ever leave?). Some scanners will show that I am infected, others no sign. I've got some malware wipe and some other crap with spybot. I ran xclean and got some very alarming trojans called prutect and spyagent.ak. Hijackthis does not seem to show any trace of these things. Obviously I have something and its hiding, I just don't know what to do to find it and destroy it. I am not that good with computers, I do what I can though. i just really do not feel safe using this computer, although i need to use it. Its giving me a an hour and a half of relief so far. Thats how long it hasn't frozen. It should be up to its tricks in no time though. I would really appreciate any help that can be given.

Hello Captaintripps,

Sorry for the delay. We have many logs backed up.

There are many reasons for a freezing computer. The cause may be malware, or hardware, software, drivers or RAM (memory).

We will check for malware and see what we find.

NOTE: If you have downloaded SmitfraudFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of the SmitfraudFix report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi Captaintripps,

I forgot to mention I had smitfraud too. I don't know if its gone or what though. I downloaded smitfraudfix.exe and ran it in safemode and everything, but when I scanned the computer, it detected the trojan smitfraudfix.exe. I don't understand that and am very confused. Please help.

The SmitfraudFix report says there is no Smitfraud on your computer. What program was saying you had Smitfraud?

We will run some scans and see what they find.

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
Disable your antivirus program and go here to run BitDefender Online Scan.
Click on I Agree.
Avoid clicking on other links as you don't need to try out the full install at this point, just the online scanner.

When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan".
Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer.

NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat the BitDefender Online Scan.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

******************

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5.
  • After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
  • Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
  • Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
  • Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
  • After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
  • Connect to the Internet, go back to AVG Anti-Spyware, select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update successful" message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". (Note: When run in safe mode, sometimes the GUI is larger than the screen and the buttons at the bottom are partly or completely hidden, making them unaccessible for doing a scan. If this is the case, press the WINKEY + M key to "Minimize" the AVG display. Then right-click on AVG in the Task Bar and select "Maximize". If that does not help, then you may have to run your scan in normal mode and advise your helper afterwards.)

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
  • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Do not automatically generate reports" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
  • When the scan has finished, it should automatically be set to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there.
  • You will also be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.
  • Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop.
A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. Doing so can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

AVG Anti-Spyware is free for 30 days and all the extensions of the full version will be activated. After the 30 day trial, active protection extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version that you can can continue to use as an on-demand scanner or you may purchase a license to use the full version.

When done, submit the BitDefender log, the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 log and a fresh Hijackthis log.

i haven't had smitfraud detected during any more of my scans since then( I scan a lot!), but I'm pretty sure it was with Spybot. Ok, when you say disable anitvirus programs when I run the other scan, do you mean any I may have on my computer?

Yes, disable any that you have on your computer. You should have only ONE antivirus active in memory. If your Avast antivirus program is active then it will create problems with the scan.

Hello Captaintripps,

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please disable Trojan Hunter Guard, as it may interfere with the fix.

To disable Trojan Hunter Guard:
Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red.
Right click it and select settings. Uncheck "Load at startup" and "Enabled"

Once your log is clean you can re-enable Trojan Hunter Guard.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language  jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer.

 Let's run ComboFix.

Make sure your AVAST antivirus, Windows Defender, Trojan Hunter are disabled

To disable Windows Defender:
Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

If you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you have and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

Disconnect from the Internet while running ComboFix.

Temporarily disable any anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix  log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.
Do NOT run ComboFix more than once.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".

Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100.

Hi Captaintripps,

I see something strange here.

ComboFix says you ran it previously. Did you run ComobFix 17 times? If so, why?

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

I see you installed and ran
PC Registry Cleaner
Registry Clean Expert
Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

I DO NOT recommend Registry Cleaners. This because some may rather damage than cleaning/fixing your registry.
Only use it if you have basic knowledge about the registry and know if a certain key/value is safe to be removed or not. Cleaning the registry won't really improve system performance anyway even though there are a lot of orphaned keys. If registry cleaning was really required, then Microsoft would have added this option already imho.
So use at your own risk. After all, a corrupted registry is a corrupted Windows.

Should I Use a Registry Cleaner?
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099

Also, I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter.
When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program.

If it asks to reboot, do not reboot. It is not necessary to reboot to get the items to show up in HijackThis.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply.

I was receiving help on another forum, and was instructed to use combofix. It never brought up a log for me, so I was told to remove it, try again...

So you ran it 16 times? What forum told you do this?

about the registry cleaners, i was desperate and asked the yahoo answer group for help. Thats what they advised to download.

Did you make backups of the registry before you used the "registry cleaners" (so you can go back)?

How is the computer running.

I was on daniweb. I think the registry cleaners made backups. At least from what I can remember the registry cleaners always asked me if i wanted to make one and i'm pretty sure I said yes. The computer is running suprisingly well actually. It hasn't frozen on me in about a week. I was curious the other day to see if it would still freeze, so I attempted to burn a cd. But then, it did indeed freeze instantly. From that it would sound like its hardware, but then why would my computer get better? To me, it seemed when I would do no scans or anything the computer would just give me hell--freezing many times. Then, as soon as I ran many scans and everything , it would start running more normally. Weird huh? What does this seem like to you?
