:thumbsup: HELP... PLEASE HELP!

I have a persistant problem with IE; 'about:blank' has become my homepage. I have gone through the procedure described by Grinler (Nov 2 2004), but the 'about:blank' remains.

Here's the HijackThis log:

Still no luck. I've scanned with various 'free' spyware removal programs, which all seem to detect something different and 'promise' (for a fee of coarse) to remove.

Is anyone able to solve my problem? :thumbsup:

Is anyone able to tell me who's responsible?! :flowers:

Yours deperately,

Hi blonde,

Welcome to the forums.

You beat me to the post. I was reviewing your log and could not see much wrong with it except this entry

O2 - BHO: QuickSearch Search Bar - {82315A18-6CFB-44a7-BDFD-90E36537C252} - C:\Program Files\QuickSearch\QuickSearchBar1_27.dll

I don't think this is the cause of your problems. We'll get rid of this one later.

You may have one of the nastier variants of CWS and I'd like you to check this.

1. Obtain list of irregular services:
* Please download ServiceFilter.
* Unzip ServiceFilter.zip to a convenient folder like C:\ServiceFilter.
* Navigate to where you unzipped it and double-click on ServiceFilter.vbs.
* If you have an active anti-virus it might prevent the script from starting. Please allow the script to run.
* It will open a text file (POST_THIS.TXT) that lists all of the irregular services.
* Press Ctrl + A simultaneously to select all of the text.
* Copy and paste the whole thing into your next post.
* A copy of POST_THIS.TXT is saved to where ServiceFilter.vbs was saved just in case you accidentally close out of it.

Copy the Post_This.txt log as well as a fresh Hijack This log in your reply.

Please do not reboot the machine from now on unless instructed to.

Hi picard_uk,

Here are the logs:

The script did not recognize the services listed below.
This does not mean that they are a problem.

Hi blonde,

That looks OK.

Run HiJackThis, scan and place a check mark next to the following

O2 - BHO: QuickSearch Search Bar - {82315A18-6CFB-44a7-BDFD-90E36537C252} - C:\Program Files\QuickSearch\QuickSearchBar1_27.dll

With no other windows or browser windows open hit "Fix checked"

Reboot.

Try resetting your homepage in Internet Explorer. Select Tools, Internet Options and enter the URL you want to use. Let's see if it stays that way.

Let me know how you get on.

picard.

Hi blonde,

I'd like you to carry out the following steps

Please download Ad-Aware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
The personal version is free.
Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Once it has updated you can close the program, we will use it later.

I'd like you to download this free cleanup utility
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
On the downloads page you will find CleanUp312.exe
Install this but do NOT run it yet.

I'd like you to download the standalone version of CWShredder
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr...r_download.html
Do NOT run it yet.

Please download About:Buster from here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
Once it is downloaded, extract/unzip it to c:\aboutbuster.
Do NOT run it yet.

Reboot, on restart, start in "Safe Mode".
How To
1. Restart the computer.
2. As the computer restarts, begin tapping the F8 key until the Windows XP startup menu appears.
3. Choose Safe mode from the startup menu, and then press Enter. Windows starts in Safe mode.

Show "Hidden files and folders".
How to
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
In the Advanced settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, select Show hidden files and folders
Remove the check mark from "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run CWShredder and select Fix

Run About:Buster two times. Save the log file. I'll need to see it.

Next, you need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
* Automatically save log-file
* Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
* Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
* Scan Within Archives
* Scan Active Processes
* Scan Registry
* Deep Scan Registry
* Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
* Scan my Hosts file
* Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
* All of your hard drives

Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
* Include additional process information
* Include additional file information
* Include environment information

Click the Tweak button and select:
* Under the Scanning Engine:
o Unload recognized processes & modules during scan
o Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
* Under the Cleaning Engine:
o Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click on Proceed to save the settings.

Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
* Use Custom Scanning Options

Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish.

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Run the cleanup utility you downloaded earlier. This will delete the contents of the Recycle Bin, C:\Temp, Windows Temporary folder, Temporary Internet Files, cookies etc.

Let me know how you get on.

Reboot normally, run HiJackThis, scan and post a fresh log file in this thread, include your About:Buster log.

picard.

Hi blonde,

It looks like this will take a few more steps to remove this one.

You may want to print these instructions or copy and paste them into Wordpad/Notepad as you will be offline for some of the fix.

Please download the Symantec removal tool from here:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxAgentB.exe

Close all running programs.

If you are on a network or if you have a full-time connection to the Internet, disconnect the computer from the network and the Internet.

Turn off System Restore.
1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore"
5. Click Apply.
This will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
6. Click OK.

Locate the file that you just downloaded.
Double-click the FxAgentB.exe file to start the removal tool.
When the following message appears, click OK

Please do NOT start any other applications until the removal tool exits and the computer is restarted.
Doing so may cause reinfection.

Click Start to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run. This may take some time.
Restart the computer.

When the tool has finished running, you will see a message indicating whether Backdoor.Agent.B has infected the computer. The tool displays results similar to the following:

* Total number of the scanned files
* Number of deleted files
* Number of repaired files
* Number of terminated viral processes
* Number of terminated viral threads
* Number of fixed registry entries

Run the removal tool again to ensure that the system is clean.

Let me know the results of the scans.

Run CWShredder.

Re-enable System Restore. Follow the details given previously. At point 4, turn on system restore and name the point.

If you are on a network or if you have a full-time connection to the Internet, reconnect the computer to the network or to the Internet connection.

Run HiJackThis, scan and post a fresh log file.

Good to have you back!

Hi picard,

I downloaded and ran klwk.zip (MS-DOS application). It didn't appear to detect anything.

Rebooted, and about:blank still here.

Shall I post a new HTF log?

Cheers,

blonde

Hi blonde,

You can leave the HJT log for now.

Create a new Folder, C:\Dllcompare

Download DllCompare.exe to that folder then run it
http://downloads.subratam.org/DllCompare.exe

When it has downloaded, run the program and click on the Run Locate.com button. When that has completed, click on the compare button. When that completed click on the make log button. Then post the contents of that log as a reply to this post.
