I am having a serious problem with these frequent crashes. I'll start with some preliminary info, because it might be relevant.

Prologue: This computer has always had a "locking" problem. At totally random times, it would simply freeze. If sound was playing, the sound would go haywire and distort into a weird buzzing sound. No error message. My only option was to flip off the power switch, wait a few seconds, then switch it back on. Sometimes I would get a "Windows has recovered from a serious error" message upon reboot. I always suspected that my onboard audio might be the culprit, on account of the weird noises it would make, but never solved or confirmed this. Also, the problem seemed to fade the longer my computer was on. It's usually running 24/7, but whenever I'd have to turn it off or reboot, it would lock up 3 or 4 times that day. Once I got through those lockups, I would go weeks without one.

Current Problem: Yesterday I shut down my computer and opened it up to check on my memory. I was considering a RAM upgrade and wanted to doublecheck what I already had in there. While I was at it, I used one of those compressed air canisters to blow some dust out. While I was clearing out the heatsink on the processor, I forgot to hold the processor fan still, so the air stream got that fan spinning. I know this can cause it to build up a voltage and cause damage, so that's why I mentioned that. Other than that, I didn't touch anything in there. I closed it back up and started it up. Everything was fine. Then a lockup. Same as usual. Reboot. Everything fine.

I started playing City of Heroes (an online superhero game). My computer runs this game normally with no problems. After a few minutes, however, the game's graphics got incredibly choppy, slowed to a crawl, and the game stopped responding to commands. I could only get very weird, choppy mouse movements of my cursor. I hit ctrl-alt-del and the whole system went into reboot. I could hear the hard drive spinning up and the little system beep. However, nothing appeared on my monitor, which was acting as if it was getting no signal. I tried rebooting several times via the power switch, and kept the speakers turned on to see if maybe Windows was booting properly (to see if I'd hear the startup sound). But no, it wasn't just a video card or monitor problem. Reboots resulted in no sounds, no signal to monitor. Hard drive spun, it sounded like everything was firing up as normal, but nothing. I gave up and went to bed.

This morning, I fired it up, and it booted normally. No problems whatsoever. I checked email, browsed the web and did other "low impact" stuff, and left the computer on all day. No problems. Tonight I started playing City of Heroes again. After about 2 minutes, the graphics went haywire and the system froze. Upon reboot, same as last night. Hard drive spinning, system beeps, no signal to monitor. I went away for about half an hour, came back and it fired up normally. I'm typing this post on it right now. The only thing of note is that today, when the machine is on, the fans sound a little...."funny." It's hard to explain and might just be in my head, but the fans just sound different than usual.

I ran AdAware and it came up perfectly clean (as usual, I run a tight system, haven't had a single instance of spyware in many months). Windows Event Viewer shows nothing at all related to these crashes/lockups.

Does this sound like an overheating problem? Some thing more severe with my hardware? It doesn't seem like a software problem to me. I just don't know where to begin troubleshooting something like this. I'll post my dxdiag and hijackthis logs below. Thanks to anyone who can offer some help! :-)

Here's my dxdiag log:

That would be my first guess.
The vga overheating.
Have you cleaned the fan on that?
Video overheat is known culprit to cause lock ups and artefacting.

Do you get a green led on monitor with no picture or is it yellow or something when you boot and it hangs?

Just a coupple of thoughts.

It's yellow on the monitor. Just as if the monitor had gone into power saver mode. Or when you turn a monitor on when the computer isn't on, and it says something like "Switching off in 5 seconds" and then goes into Power Saver mode? It does that if I turn it off and then on while the reboot is hanging.

I don't think I specifically cleaned the video card fan. My air can was running out of steam, so I didn't do as thorough a job as usual. Guess I'll buy some more tomorrow and give it another cleaning. What's the risk of permanent damage if this is the case? Hehe, half of me is hoping my video card is shot so I have an excuse to give my wife when I buy a new (better) one. ;-)

The risk is minimal.
The best way is to take the card out. There is a few screws probably 4 you need to unscrew to get to the fan, so you can clean it proper.
Ground yourself first.
Be careful. It's not a problem, done it a million times. Just don't take anything apart you don't need to.

The led tells me we are dealing with a definate hardware problem. I suppose you suspected that. I would post in that forum, if you cannot get it working.
Try clean that fan first.

Good luck.

Cool, thanks for the help. Do you think overheating could be responsible for all the lockups this system has had over it's lifetime?

That hard to say. I don't know.
The thing is, there are a few things that suggest this is the problem, like you need to wait a bit for it to cool down, before you can turn it on.
That would indicate the cpu though.
Overheating would be where I would place my bet, but this is a risky bussiness.

*edit
There are utils that can monitor the temp for you.
Try look in the nvidia control panel. You might need to install additional software.
Also in bios there are probebly temp readings.

Hm. Well, I know this is venturing well into hardware territory, but assuming I've got a heat problem, what's the best way to mitigate that? Just stick a couple of extra fans in there? I'd imagine my PS can handle one or two more, but that computer is loud enough already! :-) I should probably do a better job of keeping it cleaned out in there.

You very rarely needs more than stock fans.
That's just for show off. :D
Keep it clean. Run with an open case. Get better or new fans, when they grow tired. That's what I do.
It shouldn't be that hard though to stick some fans in there.
Usually it's low air intake front -> out back top/middle.
Got one extra on my 8800 gts system, but it runs with it turned off usually.

You may need to adjust the auto reboot option in XP, so that Event Viewer records some data:

Disable Auto Reboot On System Crash - http://www.theeldergeek.com/auto_reboot_on_system_crash.htm

Sometimes just blowing air through the fan is not enough to get all the crud out of the heatsink. If you remove the fan there might still be a lot left in the fins

I'll do a full disassemble/cleaning today, try everything out and report my results. Thanks everyone! :-)

Edit - Also disabled auto reboot, so if it does happen again, hopefully I'll get a log.

If your full disassembly involves removing the heatsink from the CPU, don't forget to reapply the thermal compound

Just about to get started....I think my disassembly will not be *quite* that full.

garmanma is right about it. It could even gather in lumps, that you cannot blow out. You need to literally scrape it out. The problem is with stockheatsink fans. Those are often attached with a plastic (easy break) solution. So it makes you wonder, if they actually suppposed to break. To get them of, you best be very sure what you have to do. For excample the lastest intels have to be turned/pressed in some peculiar manner. Also might break something on the motherboard.

One area of the PC I was really surprised needed to be keep clean, was the capacitators on the motherboard. Actually can make a huge (really) difference. Also here you might need to apply your own good sence in getting rid of it all.

Well be careful will you and good luck. I know there is a tut about cleaning PCs here. Maybe have a look.

Ok, all cleaned and I "tested" by playing that online game that caused the other crashes. A half hour of playing, no problems at all. We'll see what happens when I put in a few hours later tonight.

I was amazed how filthy the heat sink and fan on the video card were. Now I know I really need to take the card out to clean that thing. It was caked with crap. I'm sure that made a huge difference. I couldn't get the fan off of the MoBo processor - it's a big black plastic frame with these grey latches. I could undo the latches but couldn't figure out how to get the fan or frame off. Rather than force it and really screw something up, I just cleaned in there really thoroughly in between the fan blades. I'm also running with the case open. I'll have to clean more often, but oh well.

Fingers crossed that my problem is really solved. Thanks very much!
