Hi , my friend has a problem with their computer
Which is running Windows XP, The problem is
When this is done …

Start > programs > Accessories > System tools >
System Restore .

When system restore is left clicked..there’s a very quick
Flash on screen , too quick to see what it is , and then
Nothing happens.. no System Restore Box appearing.

Can some one please tell me how to get back the System
Restore Option..?

Many Thanks

Hmm..to start with make sure your pc isnt infected by any virus and definitions on your antivirus is uptodate.

Secondly, if something weird happens when you do both below command, please make a virus scan.

a) start->run type msconfig
:thumbsup: start->run type regedit
c) press ctrl+alt+del

If anything block this applications, there's a possibility of a registery error or a virus infection. Hope it will help and good luck.

System Restore Restoration:

1. http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

2. for the "system restore" stuff i had a hard time finding a solution for my computer: i'll share this for the benefit of anyone who might encounter this problem! i reinstalled system restore (windows xp pro sp 2).

click start, run and type %Windir%\INF

find the SR.INF file.

right-click the SR.INF file, and then click install

Windows may prompt for the Windows installation source path.
Point to %Windir%\ServicePackFiles(service pack of your system) folder, or dowload the WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe from microsoft(follow the details on how to install etc.) which i did since mine was missing(i386 file to be exact) for reasons i dont know

Well we have tried all of the above advice , with the last one being ..

click start, run and type %Windir%\INF

find the SR.INF file.

right-click the SR.INF file, and then click install

there was no ... SR.INF file shown , the nearest to the name we found is ... SR.PNF

the file above the SR.PNF is shown as .... sonypvu1

So we are still stuck with out the System Restore option .... can any one help further please..?

Thanks

I'm not real good with System Restore - but it sounds like some files are missing. If this was caused by malware, then the first step would be to ensure that the infection is completely removed.

Next would be to run SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from the Run dialog to see if that remedies it.
If not, then a repair install of XP would probably be called for: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
