Hi Johannes. Thanks for the reply. I know you guys are really busy, especially with this great site and the increasing "bad guys" out there. I'll say first that I only have a dial up connection but even so my pc is getting slower and slower. I check my connection speed before I start surfing and or downloading so it's definately not that. I've tried everything to clean up. eg spybot, adaware, avg ( anti spyware and virus ), CCleaner, combo fix and atf cleaner and geting rid of old restore points etc to no avail. I cant help but think there is something "lurking" in the shadows of my pc. Some days it will run ok but then only half the day ...... ? Anyways here's a new log, thanks Johannes

Hey shred1970,

Step #1

It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and install one of these excellent (and free) products:If you want to have a look at the user manuals for the above suggested programs, have a look at the following:If you do decide to install a third party firewall, make sure that the windows firewall is not running and if it is, deactivate it.

Step #2

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #3

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in InternetExplorer:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Step #4

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close ALL applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.
The logs can be quite lengthy..use two post if you need to get them all in.

Step #5

Please post back with the main.txt and the extra.txt from the DSS scan. Thanks.

Hey Shred1970,

Step #1

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case Emule). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (ie the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

Step #2

Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Java™ 6 Update 2

Step #3

One reason why your pc could be a bit slow is this:

Total Physical Memory: 384 MiB (512 MiB recommended).

I suggest you might consider upgrading your RAM. If you are not sure what kind you need to get, there are tools like siw.exe helping you to find out more about your PCs inner workings  .

Step #4

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)

Step #5

Make sure you enable your Firewall again.

Step #6

Please download DAFT and save it to your desktop:
  • Double-click the daft.exe icon. Read the disclaimer and click OK.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Place a checkmark next to the following entries:

    .bat
    .com
    .pif
    .reg
    .scr
    .txt

  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt.
Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #7

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how your PC is running. Thanks.

Hey Shred1970,

good to see we are making progress. As mentioned earlier, I strongly suggest to avoid using file-sharing networks as they are packed with malware and most of its contents is illegal to download anyway.

Step #1

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
(You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)
  • Follow the Instruction Here for installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Step #2

Please post the log from the F-Secure Onlinescan and a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks.

hi Yourhighness, I increased my "page file" section in my pc to give me more "fake" (but working) RAM, I increased it from 547 or so Mb to 800 Mb and it seems to have worked to make things more smooth and still have had no probs with slowing down yet since doing that.. IE switching between windows is immediate now and no lag now .... I will download and run the F-secure tomorrow .. i just dont have time tonight . thanx heaps Johannes

Hi Johannes, I'm having a lot of trouble with the F-secure. I start to download the components and it keeps saying during the download that there is a problem with downloading the components. I clicked yes to the active x control and followed the steps carefully but after 2025 kb's worth of download it keeps sayings there is a problem ..... I've tried to redo it 4 or 5 times now with the same message ????

Hey Shred1970,

good to see that the F-Secure scan did work in the end.

Step #1

Please now navigate to and delete the following:

C:\Deckard <-- this folder
dss.exe <-- this files
daft.exe <-- this files

Step #2

Please also have a look at the following links, giving some advice and suggestions for preventing future infections:Now you should Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools cannot access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site !
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • By updating your machine, you have one less headache! Posted Image
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • If you wish, you can also use automatic updates. This is a good thing to have if you want to be up-to-date all the time, but can also be a bit of an annoyance due to its handling and the sizes of the updates. If you wish to turn on automatic updates then you will find here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates.
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.
  • If you do not want to have automatic updates turned on, or are on dial-up, you can always download updates seperately at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

For a nice list of freeware programmes in all categories, please have a look at this thread with freeware products that are regarded as useful by the users of this forum: Commonly Used Freeware Replacements.

Another recommendation, is to download HostMan. It safeguards you with a regularly updated Hosts-file that blocks dangerous sites from opening. This adds another bit of safety while surfing the Internet. For installlation and setting up, follow these steps:
  • Double-click the Downloaded installer and install the tool to a location of your choice
  • Via the Startmenu, navigate to HostsMan and run the program.
    • Click "Hosts" in the menu
    • Click "Manage Updates" in the submenu
    • Out of the three, select atl east one of them (I have MVPS Host as my main one)
    • Click "Add Update." After that you will only need to click on the following button to retrieve updates:
      Posted Image
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help and if there any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BC, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!
