I guess the title says it all, I finally gave up on one computer and have decided to format the HD, so,
before doing this I thought that it would be nice to know if I am going to get what I need for this type of installation.

The only other disc I have are the Compaq Operating System CD for Windows XP Home and the two CD's that go with it.

Thankful to have some good advice.

Is there a manual for your system...that tells you what that O/S disk will do (and won't do)?

If so, I suggest you read it before doing anything.

Theoretically (if I take your post at face value), you have an O/S disk which should reinstall XP. I have no idea what the other two disks are supposed to contain...can you fill us in?

I can guess, but my guesses could be wrong and this is not my system to speculate about.

Is it really an XP disk...or just an SP2 disk?

Just to be clear...you have a total of 4 CDs, right?

Thanks Hamuluis,

I have the 3 CDs that came with the CP-4403US, I think there was suppose to be 4, but some PC's were packed for some reason with three;
1. Compaq Presario Operating System CD Windows XP Home SP1
2 Restore Supplemental Software (additional applications)
3.Compaq Restore Plus !(start with this CD for restore)

Then I received from MS,
Windows XP Service pack 2 (with adnanced security technologies)

I believe that I have done an install from a formatted disk on this computer, (CP 5300US), Installing XPsp1 first then XP sp2,
I am fairly sure that the drive was formatted, (absent of driver software)

Thanks :trumpet:, I understand now.

Just to be sure...you want to do a clean install, erasing everything currently on your system, right?

As I understand it, the restore disk will take your system back to what it was initially when purchased. That should be the first disk you use, according to instructions.

Since they supplied you with an O/S disk, the restore procedure will (probably) prompt for it at some point. Maybe not, I don't know since I've never had a system with restore CDs. In any case, this CD should be handy when you start.

At this point, it seems that you need to ensure that the XP firewall is properly on/active.

Later, you should be prompted to insert the Supplemental Software CD...but I really don't know. In any case, you will have to use that at some point to reinstall the initial software that came on your XP system.

This is probably a good time to go to Device Manager and check that all drivers have been properly installed and ensure that you have no yellow or red markings for any of your devices reflected in Device Manager.

Finally, you will need to install the SP2 for XP, via the SP2 CD.

After SP2 is installed and you are sure that your system is as it should be, go to the WinUpdate site and download/install all critical updates. There will be in excess of 85, so be patient :thumbsup:.

If you have any questions, just post back and someone will probably have an intelligent suggestion/answer :flowers:.

I ran into a problem with the last of the first three disk, It appears that the D/L has stopped and is sitting there with the Compaq drums beating but I don't think it any longer progressing.

There is a box with a large red X on the screen ;
fbism.exe - No Disk, .saying There is no disk in the drive. please insert a disck into Drive A;.

fbism.exe descriptionDescriptionN/A

RecommendationNot a critical component, but see the
information above before disabling it. It is highly
recommended to Run a Free Performance Scan to
automatically optimize memory, CPU and Internet
Settings..

I am not sure what to do, as I know if I turn off the computer against compac instructions

Software is being installed for you. The sytem may reboot, etc.
Do Not Turn Off Power, etc.

Will appreciate your advice.

I cannot advise you on how recovery disks perform, I don't have such.

Info on FBISM.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/FBISM.exe-1685.html

You don't have anything to lose by continuing, since you have no O/S right now.

I was able to get through the 3 disk WXP Sp1 installation, however as I was loading W Service pack 2, I ran into another problem during the extraction of files ;
This in first box;
Extracting File: i386\wind_w.ch_
To Directory c:\196cc8ec4758810e8b2b

Second small box Extraction Failed
red X ---- File is corrupt

I have also noticed same symptomns as before the initial installation ;
The system has recovered from a serious, etc,.

Carpserve has encountered a problem, etc.

Do I have any options here ?

Well...it seems to me that you don't have reliable disks...or you don't have a reliable system...and it's impossible to tell as I wade through your various posts.

You will continue just going in circles...until you eliminate one or the other. That's how I see it.

How old are the diskettes that you are copying to? Have they been reformatted a few times?

This article lists the problems that are fixed in
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
Service packs are cumulative. This means that
the problems that are fixed in a service pack
are also fixed in later service packs.
For example, Windows XP SP2 contains all the
fixes that are included in Windows XP Service

My problem with this is that in trying to determine which is at fault, the two previous problems; 1. carpserve
2, Serious Problem etc, have persisted from old OS, at least it apperars this way, how can this be ?

I have decided I would format (C:)

I got this Windows cannot format this drive, Quit any disk, utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no windows is displaying the contents of the drive .
Then try formatting again.

Everything is closed but I still get this.

The diskettes I am using I am not copying to I am installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, it is about a month old from MS, I have had it in and out of two computers, as I installed it in this CP 5300US, now I am working on CP 4300US.

I managed to install WXP SP2 without having to format the HD, . . .but, I am getting ;

The file or directory is corrupted

Also; I am not positive it appears that I received thius message, Run Chkdsk Utility shmgrate.exe is corrupted.

I did this but only know that it did not change the status of file or directory corruption.

Any good advice ?

BTW How does that happen with a fresh start and D/L ?

PS, Sorry Correction, I have my doubts if it was a proper D/L, I can not get into Systems Information and it does not appear to be SP2.

Could I Install SP1 from the disc then D/L sp2 from the internet ?

If I can should I update to the SP3 Version ?

I found this and have a question ?

As listed in my computer PC 4300US per Windows Task Manager

svchost.exe ( 4 Listings)

Per BC Startup List
and alot of Red X's

11 Pages I don't really Understand ! Is it or isn't it ?

Can You givme a hand here?

Also,

I have found, concerning this thread,

If Spelling The Name Is So Important Than Why ?
shmgrate Windows Startup Programs Database

That this is a probable Trojan !

If so, Is it possible that during a previous installation on my (CP 5300US), that the CD could have picked this up ?, because I found it as I was using the CD to install WXPSP2 on my (CP 4300US) which is the installation that this thread is about.

The 4300US is now insatlled with WXP SP1 and I think that the (WXPSP2) disk is bad !

Wait a minute I just checked it is on both computers but I am still not sure if it is a hostile !
