Hi,
I have been through all the steps in the preparation guide although i have had to restart a few extra times as i could not connect to the internet. my pc is now operating slower and a variety of things are not functioning correctly.

on start up every time i am getting a message "error loading c:\windows\system32\uhmgabdl.dll specific module could not be found" and a security alert saying "your pc could be at risk - your antivirus status is unknown"
I am also sometimes getting a run or dos type window loading up which says one or all of the following
c:\services.exe
c:\c.exe
c:\b.exe
c:\d.exe

norton antivirus is detecting the following at various times:
virtumonde,
windows security centre antivirus disable notify, and
trojan.vundo.
the files and locations indicated by norton are: c:\documents and settings\rich\local settings\temp internet files\content.ie5\ with the following files all having come up on separate occasions:
04QV4LQB\upd32_v14{1}
mosx1024{1}
poiu{1}

I have had a fatal system error once after an adaware scan and i lost all the icons on my desktop once also.
svchost.exe is always asking for permission to access the internet a lot. i have allowed it a few times as the internet connection wasn't workign and it seemed to fix that. dna.exe is also asking for permission
Please help. HIjack this below. thanks

Hello richosti,

Let's run ComboFix.

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

If you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you have and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

Disconnect from the Internet while running ComboFix.

Temporarily disable any anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.
Do NOT run ComboFix more than once.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".

If you have Norton Antivirus installed then disable script blocking so it will not interfere with the fix.

To disable Norton Script blocking Service:

* Disable the Script Blocking Service:
To open Services, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
Find ScriptBlocking services, Right-click the service, and then click and then click Properties.
On the General tab, under Startup, click Disabled.
Under Service Status, click Stop button. Click Apply button.

* Disable the Script Blocking In Norton Settings:
Start Norton Antivirus.
Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton Antivirus. The Norton Antivirus Options dialog box appears.
Click Script Blocking.
Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
Click OK
You can reenable it afterwards when everything is clean again.

hi sifumike
thanks heaps for your advice
i have just started the process you recommended. i tried to disable scriptblocking in the admin tools/services area but it was not listed (i tried help and a google search to locate but didn't get anything useful). i also went to the norton/symantec window and options (as you recommended) were not an option (i have an old version of norton corporate antivirus that a friend installed, it still updates though). i downloaded combofix. then i disabled teatimer, turned windows defender realtime protection off, rebooted (as suggested from the disable teatimer link you posted) and then disconnected from the internet and disabled norton, peerguardian, windows defender and avg anti spyware.
i ran combofix and it has told me clock settings have been changed (they haven't) and it has gone to "completed stage 8" and hasn't progressed for the last 50 minutes? i am on another machine currently (i have 2 at home: one new (infected), one ancient (not infected)) and am wondering what to do from here?
UPDATE another hour combofix window still the same. going to bed now. goodnight.
thanks again.

Hi richosti,

Did ComboFix ever complete?
If it hung up, how far did it get? Which stage did it complete?

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
Lets use remove some of the malware on this computere and perhaps ComboFix will work.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

    (where "********_******" is the "date_time")
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer.

Run ComboFix again.

Post the ComboFix  log and a fresh Hijackthis log, the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
in your next reply.

No, you dont need to do it with those. If you are running ComboFix, then that require you disable you antivirus, and registry protectors (but not your firewall).

ComboFix should make it past Stage 8 if everything is disabled.

hi mike
i ran vundofix and it found nothing.
i did the fix on hjt although the entry"O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DC6_check] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\dc6_startupmon.exe" was not found. this is probably because before you applied to my original post i ran panda and f secure scan.

i ran otmoveit and it moved the files you suggested although upon reboot the file was not under c:_otmoveit nor was there a folder named such.
i ran ccleaner and rebooted and ran combofix. combofix got to "completed stage 8" and did not go any further
i have also had lots of "system alert:malware threats" "security alert: networm-i.virus@fp" "system performance monitor: warning" internet explorer alert: fatal error! unhandled exception" all of these alerts say click this balloon or download this software.
i also have had 2 icons installed on my desktop "online security guide" and "live safety center"

finally after i rebooted after combofix failed again, my desktop did not come back and i had to go to task manager and restart, still no desktop, went to task manager again which loaded firefox. i then logged off my user account (there is only one) and back on and my desktop was back? i have reenabled teatimer etc. fresh hjt log below. the infected machine is not connecting to internet or starting up properly. desktop icons are missing or it is not booting up all the way and remaining frozen.
i am getting worried it may die altogether???

Hi richosti,

i am getting worried it may die altogether???

Yes, that is a possiblity.

This computer is really infected.

i ran vundofix and it found nothing

.

Please do not run tools behind my back. It is hard enough to fix this computer with out you complicating the problem by running tools without my knowledge.

If you want to fix this yourself then I will step aside and let you do it.
If not, then do not run tools behind my back.

ran combofix. combofix got to "completed stage 8" and did not go any further

Are you sure you disabled your antivirus program and registry protector (Teatimer)?
ComboFix will not run to completion if those are enabled.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

O3 - Toolbar: ICQ Toolbar - {855F3B16-6D32-4fe6-8A56-BBB695989046} - C:\Documents and Settings\Rich Nicol\My Documents\b\ICQToolbar\toolbaru.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: DomainService - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\makwocio.exe (file missing)

*******************************************

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\zfjgamfu.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c00BFA10.dat

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Note : If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
    C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\********_******.log
    (where "********_******" is the "date_time")
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

*******************************************

Reboot your computer. Post the OTMoveIt log.

i have also had lots of "system alert:malware threats" "security alert: networm-i.virus@fp" "system performance monitor: warning" internet explorer alert: fatal error! unhandled exception" all of these alerts say click this balloon or download this software.
i also have had 2 icons installed on my desktop "online security guide" and "live safety center"

This sounds like a Smitfruad infection.

NOTE: If you have downloaded SmitfraudFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

Please download SmitfraudFix

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of the SmitfraudFix report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log and the OTMoveIt log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

hi mike
thanks again
regarding vundofix you did ask me to run that in your previous post? sorry if i stuffed things i up. i have no intention of running programs behind your back.

With regard to combofix stalling again. i went through the disable teatimer procedure for spybot S&D in the link you sent and disabled realtime protection in symantec antivirus and unloaded the service (there was no icons in the taskbar for either of these) I also disabled peerguardian and AVG anti spyware.
The only thing i was unable to do was to disable Script Blocking service. I tried the following as suggested from your post:

* Disable the Script Blocking Service:
To open Services, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
Find ScriptBlocking services, Right-click the service, and then click and then click Properties.
On the General tab, under Startup, click Disabled.
Under Service Status, click Stop button. Click Apply button.

THERE WAS NO SCRIPTBLOCKING SERVICES LISTED HERE. NOT UNDER THE LETTER S ANYWAY NOR COULD I FIND IT IN THE DESCRIPTION OF EACH SERVICE?

Hi Rich,

The only thing i was unable to do was to disable Script Blocking service.

If you disable Norton/Symantec Antivirus then Script Blocking will be disabled.

Lets try running ComboFix a different way. Hopefully it will run this time.

Make sure you disable registry protectors (Teatimer), peerguardian, AVG anti spyware and your antivirus program before you run ComboFix.
Disconnect from the Internet while running ComboFix.

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste the following bolded text into the run box & click OK.

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

We will use that system resotre point as a last resort.

I do not recommend registry cleaners, as they can do more harm than good.

Only use it if you have basic knowledge about the registry and know if a certain key/value is safe to be removed or not.
Cleaning the registry won't really improve system performance anyway even though there are a lot of orphaned keys. IMHO, if registry cleaning was really required, then Microsoft would have added this option already.
So use at your own risk. After all, a corrupted registry is a corrupted Windows.

Hi rich,

Let it run for at least two hours and see if it completes.

See if you have anything in this folder C:\QooBox\LastRun\. If there is anything in it then post it.

If ComboFix does not complete then download Deckard's System Scanner to your desktop:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe

Make sure all running programs and Windows Explorer windows are closed.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it,then follow the prompts.
The scan may take a few minutes to complete.

When the scan has finished,a text file will open 'main.txt'.

Please Note:
When running Deckard's System Scanner, some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet, please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.
Also,it may happen that your Antivirus flags Deckard's System Scanner as suspicious.
Please allow the Deckard's System Scanner to run and don't let your Antivirus delete it.
(If necessary temporarily disable/turn off your Antivirus program).

Post the main.txt from the Deckard's System Scanner into your next reply please. (Do not post the extra.txt - only post extra.txt when being asked)

What Deckard's System Scanner will do:
create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.

clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.

check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
Deckard's System Scanner automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.
