Hi, I'm the IT support person for a company and one of our notebooks appears to have Vundo or a similar infection. I've tried running the vundofix utility and a lot of other stuff from this forum and others (adaware, spyware, etc).

The user got the infection whilst browsing an online poker site. The symtom is a dialog box on the screen that says "You have not sent your message. Are you sure you want to discard it?"

The output from the HJT log is below. The lines that I'm fairly sure are suspicious are the O2 & O20 ones. I tried deleting the file cmsetacld.dll from safe mode and it still won't let me, nor will it let me remove the registry key that references this file. This file's creation date is around the time when the user first reported the error which is why I'm fairly sure it's the problem.

Open to any suggestions on what the actual infection is and what to do next. Thanks.

Download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

...........
Are you sure you have the latest VundoFix tool? The latest is 6.6.0.2 just released last week.

If not, delete the one you have and download and run this latest version please and post a log from it as well

Please download

  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files,
    click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing
    Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer,
    click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new
    HiJackThis log.
