Video File Formats

I downloaded a .flv video from the net and converted it to .avi and also to mp4.i can play all these in my computer but when I burn it into cd,my cd player is not able to play it.What is the format I should convert?When I checked the format of a video my player was accepting. it showed .dat
How can I manage this problem.Please help.
