This problem is on my nephews computer: Windows XP with all updates applied. I know he uses limewire and goes to video sharing sites and plays Runescape.

Symptoms are: Yellow triangle with exclamation in task bar with balloon warning, numerous Internet Explorer popups warning of Trojans and offering bogus help.

He is using Avast Home antivirus.

I researched the problem last night and followed instructions I found on the net. Ran Ad-aware, Spybot, AVG antispyware, Kapersky Trial, used smitfraudfix in safe mode. After hours of work every thing seemed fine.

Took the computer back today. After using it for about two hours he calls me and tell me that it is happening again, so I get on my remote vnc and check it out and sure enough the same again. Don't know if he got it off of you tube video or somehow it was dormant for awhile and activated again?

Hope you can spot something for me to do for it in this Hijack Log and Statup Log:

Hi,

This looks more like a Vundo infection (which like to download more malware like the symptoms you are seeing) so we need to get rid of that to keep the malware from reinstalling and downloading more.

Please download
VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files,
    click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing
    Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer,
    click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
    ...............................

Next please run this free tool as well and post the log it makes:

Download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    1. Close any open browsers.

    2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
[list]When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

It has been more than a year since I posted this request for help. I forgot to go back to this site to check for replies.

Anyhow I finally determined that it was Vundo and got it off his machine with a combination of programs.

Thanks for your help.
