Now please Download LSPFix from:

LSP-Fix

Disconnect from the Internet and close all Internet Explorer Windows. Run then program and check the "I know what I'm doing" Button and place all listings of eguard.dll into the remove section by clicking on the button that points to the right. When all instances of this dll are in the Remove section. Press the finish button.

Then Reboot.

To see a tutorial on how to use this program click the link below:

Using LSP-Fix to remove LSP Spyware & Hijackers

When you are done post a new log

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINNT\GIGATEMP\Patch.exe

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Still no change on the Yahoo Mail access - incidentally still no reply from Yahoo Help as I have made them aware of this problem too.

Im thinking the index.dat files might hold a clue - can u recommend a reliable company?
I've seen Privacy Guardian 3.2:
http://www.pctools.com/privacy-guardian/
and Track Eraser:
http://www.acesoft.net/download.htm:
but am not sure of the two companies credibility.
It would seem possible that if tracking info is stored in these hidden files then they might be storing currupting info for my sign-in page??

No the index.dat just retains your history. It will not affect this problem. You can clean out all your cookies and see if that helps.

Also you amy want to download firefox and try that as its a better browser and may solve your problem

could it be something on the network - sniffing out my login ID and attempting to redirect the page although the original is being received by Yahoo?

Still getting the following windows box appearing after I hit sign-in:

FILE DOWNLOAD
Getting File Information:
login?.rand=7ap410fo6db5s from us.f412.mail.yahoo.com

No it does not feel like an infection, but rather something else. So when you click on the links it attempts to download them?

Check out the Download section in the Firefox options and tell me if the file type srf is listed in the file types section

Yes, it attempts to download 'Login' (no file extention)

There is no srf file under file type or in the Plug-Ins area.
