I have Windows XP, SP2, on a Toshiba laptop, and about 2 days ago began getting warnings from my Avast antivirus about the following malware:

C:\WINDOWS\ksacre.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\protector.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntio256.sys

I have followed the procedures listed in your Preparation list and run all the scans. Today Housecall, Spybot S&D, and Stinger all came up ok,but Bit Defender found one virus and deleted it. I ran my own Avast twice last night and it came up with only 1 infection, which it said to quarantine, which I did. If needed, I can provide this information as well.

Each time I connect to the internet now, I get a warning about this message:

install_bt1.exe

Avast tells me to Abort connection. I hit the button to do so and all appears to run ok until I open the next internet window, and Avast is blaring at me again.

I don't know what that is or how to clean it if it is a virus or worm. Please help me if you can. Thank you in advance.

EDIT (November 18): sorry for this, but ksacre.exe is still popping up with certain ones of my programs. Please help.

EDIT (November 19) : Ok, so today, so far, no warnings yet. All scans are coming up CLEAN. Is it gone or should I still worry?
I have run the following scans today:

Spybot Search and Destroy--Clean
Ad-Aware--Clean
Stinger--Clean
Avast!--Clean (it is the one I use and the one that WAS blaring warnings at me)
Panda ActiveScan--stalled, I could not use it though I tried several times
Trend Micro Housecall--stalled, tried several times and it would not work for me
BitDefender--found 3 viruses which it said it deleted (devadwp.exe, ksacre.exe, and system32\skuns.dat)

Am I clean or is there more that I need to do? I posted yesterday in HJT, but have received no help yet. I'll provide whatever logs I need to, but please someone help.

Please can someone check? Thank you so much.

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Haven't Had A Reply In Five Days?".

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.
How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook
