I've been looking into getting a new video card for the upcoming game Half Life 2 and maybe Rome: total war.

Half Life 2, i've looked on the ATI RADEON site, says the card thats been selected to play the game is the ATI RADEON 9800 XT. I currently right now have a geforce4.

would getting the radeon 9800 be a good purchase or could i buy something for less that has the same power to run games?

Well the 9800XT is the top of the line for ATI right now, but they can be expensive ranging from 300 to 400 dollars.

I went through the same dilemna as you when I was buying my card. I decided to go with the 9800 pro. Its not the newest or the greatest, but should more than adequate to play HL2.

Maybe some hardware junkies on here can answer your question better.

I'm running a GeForce FX 5200 Ultra. I've always been a fan of Nvidia.
Now that the FX 6800 is out ($399.00 retail locally) I would suggest you go with that one.

Yes the x800xt platinum edition womps the the 9800xt but your going to pay a price for it. And is very oveclockable. That is simply the best out there as of now untill Nvidea comes out with it's new driver's.
Heres a good comparison

well here is the price for the x800 pro

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-102-363&depa=0

and x800xt here are some of the prices

http://www.dealtime.com/xPC-ATI_RADEON_X80...P~S-2~OR-0~PG-1

I myself have a x800pro a p4 oc@3.7 a a gig of pc 4000. If you want to play the latest games as in farcry( a system eater) you also need more ram not just the vid card. Half life 2 and doom are going to be taking alot of ram as well to run properly.

lol i don't really have a choice for price. i'm going to have to get something.

Question, if i'm playing a game and the game just suddenly stops. Would this mean that i probably need more ram? I've got 512 megs of DDR i believe.

it depends what game your playing! And do you have dual channel memory and such. 512 megs is good enough to play all games out there but with games like farcry and the like will be a little buggy here and there. Could be also heat many things can cause that. And background programs running to many to type

If you want somthing ice and cheap and a great vid card here is one. Saphire tech makes great ATI card's. In fact my 9600xt came from them Still using it in another rig. It will play all games now and half life 2 and doom 3 and all etc... But ram is most important since most games dont utilize half of the vid card's ram this should be suffient for at least a good year that way you can save and get a high profile vid card

Very Good Deal

well, i've already saved enough for eith erthe 9800 xt or the x800 xt.. i guess i'll have to see the prices of both at the stores or the ati website when the x800 hits retail ( i was told the first of august when the x800 comes out).
