Not sure if this is the right place but it does cover alternative OS's

Anyone who is interested in trying out Sun Solaris as an alternative OS or just to learn it now is the time.
They are offering it for free, trying to make it open source and let us help develope it.

So how is this different from what we're using? Is it better, worse, not comparable??? I got out of microsoft because I idslike them. What I don't understand is why these linux and unix companies don't work together and really give microsoft a run for its money. But my questions still remain...

Some think sun is the best you can get in unix world. Regardless of whether or not thats true, it does have a huge commercial organization behind it that lends to good support and good optimizations.
