Hello there,

No need to start a new topic; just use the Add Reply button at the bottom.

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {22D8E815-4A5E-4DFB-845E-AAB64207F5BD} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: PCTools Site Guard - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {92085AD4-F48A-450D-BD93-B28CC7DF67CE} - (no file)
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{05AA06FD-FB0E-45EF-B9EB-BDF83D839684}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O24 - Desktop Component AutorunsDisabled: (no name) - (no file)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt).

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

BTW, I'm going to close the other thread so we don't get confused,K?

Thanks for looking at my log, Tea. I will do what you requested ASAP-- closing out the first log is a good idea. I reran the bitdefender scan-- do you want me to post a copy of that here? I left the infections for the time being since they keep coming back anyway. The directions in the tutorial were to use the post new topic button-- however, maybe you mean that I shouldn't use that in replying to you. It's great to have someone helping out. I will try my best to follow your directions carefully.

Hello,

No need for the BitDefender report right now, but thanks for offering. The tutorial was for posting your original topic only. You did right the way you replied this time.

Go ahead and follow my directions. I'll be waiting for your response.

Thanks,
tea

Hi there,

Yes you did it! And you did a good job.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: Malicious Scripts Scanner - {55EA1964-F5E4-4D6A-B9B2-125B37655FCB} - (no file)
O24 - Desktop Component AutorunsDisabled: (no name) - (no file)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

How is it running today?

Greetings Tea,

I was able to successfully delete the 02-BHO:Malicious Scripts scanner. However, the 024-Desktop Component entry keeps reappearing even after closing all browsers and windows (except Hijack This). After clicking scan, then checking that entry and clicking
Fix This, the Hijack This scanning window reappears. I click scan, and that entry has not been deleted. I rebooted after doing this last night and reran the Hijack This scan. That entry is still there.

The computer seems to be running well, but I need to do a bitdefender scan to see if the reinfection of the restore points has been resolved. I thought I would wait until you tell me to do that-- maybe there are other things you want me to do first. Especially since I cannot seem to get rid of that 024 entry. By the way, the computer has been running well even while all the restore point infections were showing up. I am just concerned that my internet activities may be in jeopardy-- especially the security while I do things like bank on-line.

I hope you are having a wonderful Sunday. I appreciate your help so much.

Hello,

You're welcome.

Please print these instructions or copy them to Notepad (or another word processor), and save it for easier reference. This is because we will be in Safe Mode during the fix and you won’t be able to access the Internet to view these instructions.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition and save that file to your desktop.

This is a 30-day trial of the program -- This means that after 30 days the "background guard" protection will be de-activated. However, this version can continue to be manually updated and used as an on-demand scanner forever.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the setup program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need to run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen select the "Update" icon, then under the "Manual update" section click the "Start update" button.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed (the progress bar will display "Update successful!") select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the "Settings" screen:
    • Click on "Recommended actions" -> select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports:" -> select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Please do NOT run a scan yet!
Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but just before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, reboot the computer and try again.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the "Safe Mode" menu item, and then press "Enter".
Then please run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab. Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select the "Apply all actions" button, AVG Anti-Spyware will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Next select the "Save Report" button at the bottom.
    • Then select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand corner of the screen and save it as a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important!).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system normally into Windows. Please post the contents of the AVG Anti-Spyware report in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
How is it running today?

Thanks,
tea

Dear Tea,

I was a very bad girl over the weekend. I did run the bitdefender scan and chose to have all the restore point infections deleted. I did it on the weekend because I don't use the computer, so it is the most convenient time to do so. I downloaded the latest bitdefender definitions, disconnected from the internet and closed all applications, including NIS, webroot spysweeper, etc., so they would not interfere. I reran the scan after deleting the restore points and it came up clean. I have done that in the past, only to get reinfected again. Will this change anything in terms of what you want me to do? Most likely the restore points are reinfected again. Please let me know. I won't do anything again before getting your OK.. I just thought it couldn't hurt.

Liz

Hi Tea,

The reports you requested are listed below. Before I ran these, a scheduled Spyware Doctor scan ran and successfully disinfected the following:
-Trojan-PWS.Tanspy (1 infection)
-RogueAntiSpyware.SystemDefender ((2 infections-- one was C:\ComboFix\ntp.exe (thought you might want to know about that) and the second was C:\SystemVolumeInformation\Restore....A0019422.exe (this looks like the recurring restore point infection))
-Trojan.Generic (1 infection)
-Application.TrackingCookies (4 of them)
-Application.Actual_Spy (4 of them)
-Spyware.Known_Bad_Sites (1 infection)

How can so many malicious things gotten past all of my antivirus and antispyware programs?? At least they are now in quarentine. Should I remove them or leave them there?

Greetings Tea,

I hope you had a good Thanksgiving holiday. I assume that is why I haven't heard back from you. I ran another bitdefender on-line scan, and this one came back with only one infection-- Trojan.Downloader.Small.Che, once again infecting restore points. Other scans are coming up clean, but I am concerned about having that Trojan on my computer. (The infection disappared again when I wiped out my restore points over the weekend, at which time I created a new, clean restore point. However, since then, the infection is again growing-- now it is on 3 restore points.) I will post a new Hijack this log here today. I would appreciate some advice from Tea, if you are available, or another member of the team, as to what to do next. Thanks so much.

Hello,

I apologize for my delayed reply. I had to move without warning and had no choice. Can you please tell how your computer is running?

Thanks,

Hi Tea,

Sorry. That's a bummer. I thought you might have given up on me, so I decided to try out Castle Cops. They had me run some other scans prior to posting a log, and a number of disturbing things have come up. In particular, I wanted to let you know that the ComboFix program is packing 2 malicious files-- identified and cleaned by Prevx2. These are: C:\\COMBOFIX\SWREG.CFEXE and C:||WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SWREG.EXE. I checked it out on the web, and it is now a known issue. After downloading that program, things on my desktop started to change-- e.g., the clock was European style and icons were moved around. That is no longer happening, so I must have gotten rid of that bug.

At this point, I think I will go ahead with Castle Cops, because I have run so many of their scans that it would seem like a waste to not post to them; on the other hand, I don't want you to think that I did not appreciate the help that you so generously gave me.

The orginal problem remains unresolved-- i.e., the persistent reinfection of restore points. This, despite the scans that I ran cleaning up Adware.vx2.111 and Agent.925, as well as the combofix contaminations. If you are interested in what Castle Cops come up with, I can get back to you. I was afraid to wait any longer because I use this computer for sensitive information and am very anxious to be sure it is secure. I hope that your living situation is resolved.

Best Regards,

lliztiz
