hi there,

appreciate your speedy reply even though this probably isnt anything that interesting!

im always keen to keep any eye on my task manager and processes, CPU usage etc, and especially concerned about about spyware, trojans et al. which led me to this post, whenever i have a browser open, there is a sister prog to explorer.exe running, called iexplorer.exe which takes up quite a fair chunk of the Mem Usage (usually around 39,708k). Well, i say a "chunk", i know its pretty minimal, however it is consistantly the most demanding programme running at any "normal" time (i.e. without running a game etc). So i was wondering if this is a necessary process and whether its malicious in anyway. I understand that some malicious software can use this process as ghost if you like and pose as iexplorer.exe, or utilise it as a backdoor route into someones box.

As far as i can see, HJT looks ok, and theres nothing on there which jumps out at me, i have run ATF cleaner, SearchAndDestroy and DrWeb both in safe mode, and i just get the odd traking cookie come up on S&D, so nothing pops up which is too concerning there?

Just wondered if all looked ok to a Professional?

Thanks again for your kind help.

Sharko.

Hi sharko,

Download Deckard's System Scanner and save it to your Desktop.

* Double click dss.exe and follow the prompts.
* When finished, it will produce a log for you.
* Post the contents of that log in your next reply.
* Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), navigate to the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. You will find two logs in the folder, main.txt and extra.txt.
* Open the main.txt log in Notepad
* Also Copy and Paste its contents in a reply.

Please post DSS main/extra logs in here.

Hi sharko,

1. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Do NOT run it yet!

2. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following program if it still exists:

PartyPoker

3. It's probably best to safe/print those instructions for use in safe mode, since you will not have access to this site at that time.

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
5) Select your normal user account.

4. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

5. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following folders in bold if it still exists:

C:\Program Files\PartyGaming

6. Reboot to go back into Normal mode

Okay no signs in DSS-logs so let's look for it specifically:

download Bobbi Flekman's Registry Search.

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it RegSearch. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

iexplorer.exe

then hit Ok

After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the string. The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe.

Copy/paste the contents of that file back here.

So please post the regsearch log.

Hi sharko,

Looking at the results I don't think there's anything wrong with your computer, malware related that is. Actually I think you're ready to go.

Let's run an online scan to be sure:

Run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Please post the F-Secure report.

thank you very much Falu for all your help on this matter. I know that these kind of "problems" arent exactly that exciting and arent much to get your teeth into!

I hope you and your family and friends have a very happy xmas and a great new year.

Hi sharko,

We're here to help anybody with malware related problems.

thank you very much Falu for all your help on this matter.

I hope you and your family and friends have a very happy xmas and a great new year.

You're very welcome ... and the same to you.

Few things to do however:

1. Since the tools we used to scan the computer, DSS and registry Search are no longer needed, they should be removed, as well as the folders created by these tools.

2. Remove previous restore points and set a new one to purge any malware that may have been backed up:

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

3. In order to prevent future infections follow these recommendations:

a. Visit Windows Update on a regular basis to stay current with critical updates.

b. Install and run the following free programs:

* Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here!

* Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found
here! Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

* SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here!

* SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here!

* IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Keep all these programs (including your anti-virus) up-to-date and run them regularly.
If you do not update regularly they will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

c. I recommend you to read Tony Klein's excellent article: So how did I get infected in the first place?

d. If you want to fight back the Malware Writers, please take a look here!

Glad I was able to help and if there are any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BleepingComputer Forums, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!

Good luck!
