hi there,

my thinkpad (win xp pro) has been infested by a nasty thing. when ever i turn it on (even in safe mode) in get the message: "windows cannot find scvhsot.exe...."
my task manager is disabled - "task manager has been disabled by your administrator" and other strange things happen (in explorer the tools tab lacks folder options).
since my norton licence has expired (didn't detect a thing) i used avg free which removed hinhem.sct, blastclann.exe and...scvhsot.exe. however the above mentioned problems prevailed.
i downloaded a trial version of kaspersky 7, whose web- and file antivirus functions slow my computer considerably when enabled (collusion with norton?), detected 4 trojans in C:/system volume information that could not be removed. in a desperate move i turned off system restore (knowingly deleting all restore pts), which did seem to eliminate these files but not the problem.

posted below is my hijack log.
please help my disinfect my poor computer!

Hi whyagain?

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

If you do not want to renew your subscription to Norton there are a few good free antiviruses out there such as:Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Norton or Kaspersky or both if you choose one of the free ones.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix). DO NOT use it just yet.

Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type A to begin the cleanup process. This may require a restart.
  • SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Regards DC

hi DC

thanks for your quick response.
before reading your message, following a friend's advice and after searching startup lists i let hijackthis fix entry F2 and 07...i hope it was the right decision and i am sorry for not waiting a bit longer for your reply...
anyway, after that i did not get the message "windows cannot find scvhsot.exe...." anymore but task manager was still disabled.

then i have followed your instructions and i send you below both reports as attachments. my task manager is however still disabled.
it might be worth mentioning that i couldn't start my machine in safe mode by pressing F8 so i did it thru msconfig.

thanks for your help and hope to hear from you soon

one more thing:
regarding your advice on the anti virus - i downloaded kaspersky as an ad hoc solution cause norton and avg (which i removed upon installing kasparsky requested me to do so) did not seem to help.
since kaspersky is anyway a 30 day trial version i wil erase when it expires because i would like to have an updated programme at least during this crises.
i could disable it on startup to avoid problems with norton, and operate it only manualy.
however if you think this duality may hamper the repair process, i will remove it.

Hi

There is no problem having two standalone antivirus scanners present on your machin as long as both do not have real time protection turned on as this can lead to false positives and one fighting against the other and will most probably slow your PC up.

This step is to fix your task manager problems.

Copy/paste the following text into a notepad file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000

Save it as taskmanager.reg and choose all files in file types.

Then double click the file and it will ask to merge to your registry. Choose yes/ok.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply with a new hijackthislog and let me know if your task manager is now working.

short update:
i saw in my task manager that scvhost.exe is running 7 processes parallel.
i started to terminate them and as i reached the third or forth one i got a window saying the system is shutting down which was initiated by NY AUTHORITY/SYSTEM and it generously gave me 60 seconds or so to save all application...

so scvhost is still running in my system and annoying me...

Hi whyagain?

I will have a full response for you soon.

Just to let you know that the infected file that you had was: scvhsot.exe and not scvhost.exe which is a legitimate windows file which as you have found out is neccesary for windows to run and is usually run in many instances!

As i said i will have further instructions for you soon.

Regards DC

Hey whyagain,

sorry for the belated reply. Demon Cleaner is unavailable for now and asked me to take this over. Sorry for the delay, it seems this one slipped through the cracks.

Please have DSS run again, to obtain an overview of the current situation of your pc. Once I have reviewed it, we will go from there. Thanks.

Hi Yourhighness,

It is now my turn to apologize for not responding for quite some time…I have been very much occupied with some stuff.
Anyway, thanks for taking over the task of helping me, I appreciate it.

I send you as an attachment the log from DSS which I ran today.
For some reason DSS only produced a new main.txt log and no new extra.txt.
I tried to look for it in the C:\Deckard folder but only main.txt was there.
Therefore I send you the new main.txt and old extra.txt.

cheers

Hey Whyagain,

Thanks for posting back.

Step #1

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #2

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
  • False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
  • System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Kaspersky Antivirus or Norton Antivirus - if you remove Norton please understand you will have to install a new Firewall as the Norton one will have been uninstalled also.

I suggest you uninstall Norton and activate your Kaspersky Antivirus again. As this is only a trial version and your trial should run out soon, I suggest you go over Demon Cleaner's post 3 again and install one of the examples given (I personally use Avira and am very happy with it). To have a working Firewall, I suggest you look at the below:

It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and install one of these excellent (and free) products:If you want to have a look at the user manuals for the above suggested programs, have a look at the following:If you do decide to install a third party firewall, make sure that the windows firewall is not running and if it is, deactivate it.

Step #3

Please copy the entire contents inside the CODE box below into Notepad.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{35f26356-e669-11db-8b21-0018deb216f7}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{ccba5193-87df-11dc-8be9-0018deb216f7}]

Then click File > Save and save as fix.reg (save as type: All files) to the Desktop.
Go to the Desktop and double-click fix.reg. When prompted to merge its contents to the registry, click the Yes button.

Step #4

Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Step #5

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Webscan (You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save Report as button >> name it >> chose "Text file" in the Save as type dialogue
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Step #6

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the log from the Kaspersky Onlinescan. Thanks.

hi Johannes,

sorry once again for the slow reply.
thanks for your recommendations; i will install one of the anti virus programmes you've suggested and remove the others once the Kaspersky trial is over and when i find the time to look thru the manuals.
in the meanwhile i have disabled the auto-protect function of Norton to avoid collusions with Kaspersky.
my Norton firewall is however functional and MS security centre also confirms it so i don't know why the log showed something else.

i followed all other instructions and ran the online scan but no threats were found.
i also ran the Kaspersky i have and it didn't find anything.
below are the logs

Hey whyagain,

How is your PC doing? Besides your two entries above, your logs look good. Once you follow my other suggestions and post a new HijackThis log, we are about to be good as gold

hi Johannes,

sorry again for the endless delay in my reply.
it seems my previous problems have indeed vanished so i thank you again for your help.

however, a new problem strange occured with my internet access. although my computer can connect to the net, both firefox and mozilla cannot display any website. however this only happens with cable connection, so if i am using wireless connection everything works well.

i consulted the technical support of IBM and they said i need to reinstall Windows, which is quite a pain in the ass.
do you have any other suggestions or should i post this at another a different forum?

frohes neues Jahr
