Hi. I recently noticed a stream of pop ups in the lower right corner of the screen telling me that I had all sorts of adware and spyware. I didn't notice this as McAfee's usual way of informing me of problems so I was wary and kept clicking no when it offered me software to delete it. However, the questions did not go away and kept bugging me.

I tried to run all of my usual programs which include,

McAfee standard products ( a scan ),
Adaware SE Personal
Spybot - Search & Destroy

on safe mode but I didn't come up with anything other then a few tracking cookies.

I then rebooted again normally and McAfee announced it had detected Virtumonde, asked if it wanted me to delete it, but could not sucessfully do so.

I then tried to perform a system restore to a few days earlier, and everything seemed to be alright. McAfee detected VUNDO this time and said it had deleted it, so I assumed all was well after performing another scan on safe mode and coming up with nothing.

The next morning after leaving the computer on overnight I noticed 28 internet explorer windows open and the messages were back. I didn't have time then so I've left the computer off for a while and only now am trying again to fix this. :(

I have performed Vundofix and Vundobegone but neither of them have fixed the issue. I was able to delete a few of the files that Vundo had created in system32 but there was one chief file that would not go. Vundobegone simply didn't detect anything.

With that, I leave you with my hijackthis log. Please help, thanks so much. ; ;

Edit: The pop-ups haven't restarted but my computer is running on a constant 100% CPU Usage now ><.. Everything has just really slowed down. ; ;

While I was waiting I changed a few things I uninstalled Internet Explorer and finally made the upgrade to Firefox and set that as my new default browser. I also finally got rid of MSN as it has been driving me crazy as well. :(

Here's an updated log:

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Slexy :thumbsup:
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Please move HijackThis to a permanent folder on the hard drive such as C:\HJT.
Create a new folder and place HijackThis.exe inside that folder so that the backups of log changes it creates are saved in the same folder and can be used to reverse any line entry deletion if found to be necessary.
If you run Hijackthis from the desktop, the files it removes will not be backed up properly.

How to create a new folder named HJT
1. Click Start/My Computer,in the 'My Computer' window,open the window in which you want to create the new folder,click on Local Disk C:
2. From the 'File' menu choose 'New'.
3. From the 'New' menu choose 'Folder'.
4. Type the folder name: HJT
5. Then press Enter.

If you need help,follow the info in the link below:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java,and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 3'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Download SDFix.exe and save it to your desktop:
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

* Double click on SDFix on your desktop,and install the fix to C:\

Please then reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
* Choose your usual account.

* In Safe Mode,go to and open the C:\SDFix folder,then double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
* Type Y to begin the script.
* It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
* When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt into your next reply.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Now download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Disconnect from the Internet.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
*Note*
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix,please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Things seem to be faster now and there's no sign of the virus, but I can't imagine it's that easy. Thanks for the work so far though. ^^

Also, do you know anything about this plugnplay.exe?

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript to your desktop.

File::

Now drag then drop the CFScript file onto ComboFix.exe as seen in the image below.

This will start ComboFix again.
After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Apologies for leaving it so long,you have a Backdoor Trojan present on your pc
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to be used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

They are typically installed without user interaction through security exploits, and may allow an attacker to remotely control the infected machine. Such risks may allow the attacker to install additional malware and use the compromised machine to participate in denial of service attacks, spamming, and bot nets, or to transmit sensitive data to a remote server. The malware may be cloaked and not visible to the user. These risks severely compromise the system by lowering security settings, installing 'backdoors,' infecting system files, or spreading to other networked machines.

If your computer was used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for email, eBay and forums.
You should consider them to be compromised.
They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one,if not an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information.
Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breech.

Since your computer was compromised read:
How to report ID theft, fraud, drive-by installs, hijacking and malware:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

If you wish to carry on and clean up your system then follow the steps below:

C:\WINDOWS\repair\smrs.exe

Then click on 'Done'.
Click the Traffic Light icon to start the program.
Then press OK at the prompts to reboot your PC.

Post the Avenger output.txt, which you can find at C:\Avenger\.txt into your next reply.

Copy and paste the following bold blue text in the Quote box below into Notepad.

Thanks for letting me know about the backdoor trojan issue, I've ran it by my folks and they've insured me they never used this computer for ordering items online.

As for the actual performance, the changes I've made today have definitely made a difference thanks to your help. Do I have a clean log? Is everything okay?

If so, thank you so much for all of your help. I really appreciate it and will try harder in the future to make sure this doesn't happen. ^^ I'm sure with firefox and a few other changes I'll remain virus-free :blink:

Have a good night :thumbsup:

Slex
