I have run my AV (Trendmicro) and Kapersky (a series of files were locked) and they have not come up with anything. Adware and Spybot came up with a series of malware which were removed. Mcfee Stinger came up empty as well. I have noticed errant behavior and have a strong feeling something is not right, but can not figure it out. Also, of late when going to my Control PAnel and clicking on Add/Remove it cycles for a very long time before displaying the progs. It did not seem to take as long in the past. Your assistance would be appreciated. Here is my log HJT and Kapersky's :

Thanks for your time and guidance. I've done as you said but still I have weird things going on. My sound was lost yesterday (reinstalled drivers now OK), system sounds now go off for stuff that did not before, I am unable to go to Windows Update (might not be new). Did install one of 3 critical upadates missing. Have run multiple scans in safe mode and both Bitdefender and TrendMicro came up empty. However Kapersky flagged a few things: well... I saw it saveed in Safe mode now I can't find.. will post later AVSpy just had a few cokies Med quarantined.. Here is my log in the meantime.

Updates missing:
Critical MS06-061 A vulnerability exists in the way XML Core Services interprets an HTTP server-side redirect. The XMLHTTP ActiveX control\'s flawed interpretation of an HTTP server-side redirect may lead to information disclosure. A remote malicious user may also be able to read information from another security zone or domain in Internet Explorer. A vulnerability in the Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) control processing could lead to remote code execution.
Critical MS06-071 This update addresses a vulnerability in the XMLHTTP ActiveX control within Microsoft XML Core Services.;An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by creating a specially crafted Web page that allows remote code execution once an unsuspecting user with administrative user rights visits the said page or clicks a link in an email message. The attacker who successfully exploits the mentioned vulnerability could access and take full control of an affected system. To sucessfully exploit the vulnerability, however, user intervention is needed.
Critical MS07-034 This security update addresses several vulnerabilities that allow remote code execution on affected systems once a user views a specially-crafted email message using Windows Mail and Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 on certain operating systems. Users granted with limited rights on systems are the least likely to be affected by these vulnerabilities.
Important MS07-047 This important security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities could allow code execution if a user viewed a specially crafted file in Windows Media Player. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
Critical MS07-057 This critical security update resolves three privately reported vulnerabilities and one publicly disclosed vulnerability. The vulnerability with the most serious security impact could allow remote code execution if a user viewed a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
Important MS07-058 This update resolves a privately reported vulnerability. A denial of service vulnerability exists in the remote procedure call (RPC) facility due to a failure in communicating with the NTLM security provider when performing authentication of RPC requests.

Sorry for the long post .. hope this tells u someting...

Hi!

#1
Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\System\panels\blank.htm

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Reboot your computer

#2
Please post a fresh hijackthis log back here.

Hi!

Let's try this:

Step one

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Step two

Please run Notepad and paste the following text into a new file:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Local Page"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Local Page"="About:Blank"

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Step three

Please Reboot your computer and post a fresh Hijackthis log back here ;)

Hi!

Yes, this was the bad line:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\System\panels\blank.htm

And now it is gone.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
________________________________________

Log looks clean...great job!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
