Hello linmoo,

We will use this fix to remove your malware. A tip of the hat to LineOFire for providing it to us.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.

SifuMike,

Many thanks for your help on this one mate. We ran into two problems during this fix. First, anytime we try to open any folder, we get the following error

Explorer.exe Application Error

The instruction "0x019ce065" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written."

Click on OK to terminate the program

This made getting to folder options difficult ... but we managed to get to it by running Windows Help where a search for "Folder Options" provided a direct link to the folder options menu. So we worked around that.

Everything else went well until we rebooted into windows and tried the online virus scan. IE still shows pop up problems and the about:blank homepage. We tried to install the TrendMicro Houscall ActiveX plugin but received the following error

The followin add-on was running when this problem occurred. File: atlsk32.dll
Description: aslsk32.dll

So we were unable to complete this step. The computer does have up-to-date norton symantic anti-virus and shows to be clean under scans.

So, that's where it is. Here are the AboutBuster logs and new HJT log.

Thanks again!

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders' and deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.

If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Delete the following files/folders in bold:

C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\jddar.dll <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlsk32.dll <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crqt.exe <==file
C:\DOCUME~1\Glenda\LOCALS~1\Temp\34.tmp.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkdl32.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkvu.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs3.exe <==file
c:\program files\180solutions\sais.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Okypkb.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Zplsur.exe <==file
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\System\MOSearch\ <==folder
C:\WINDOWS\ipsk32.exe <==file
krnverif.exe <==file You will have to search for this file. It may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\

****************************************************
Let empty the temp files:

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best).
Select the Windows Tab, Run CCleaner ,(click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then, when it finishes scanning click Exit.)
When you see "Complete" on the top line, it's done. It's very fast.

****************************************************
Download, update and run
Adaware SE

Be sure to run Adaware SE with a Full Scan in the Safe Mode.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

The following explains how to set Ad-aware's settings to perform a "Full Scan."

In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area.

The following items should be on a green check, not on a red X.

Under the Scanning button:
Scan within archives
Under Memory & Registry, Check EVERYTHING
In Check Drives & Folders, make sure all of your hard drives are selected

Under the Advanced button, check ALL under Log detail level.

Under the Tweak button...

Some of these may not be an available option, depending on your version of Ad-aware and your version of Windows. Do not be concerned if you cannot select a certain item.

In Scanning Engine:
Unload recognized processes during scanning
Include info about ignored objects in logfile, if detected in scan
Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include used command line parameters in logfile

In Cleaning Engine:
XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior to deletion
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
UNCHECK: Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click Proceed to save these settings. When you would like to perform a "Full Scan," switch the scan mode from SmartScan to Custom.

Fix whatever it suggests.

***************************************************

I know you may have anti-virus software, but sometimes its definitions are corrupted due to malware. Online scans are the best resort in this case.
Run this pc through the Panda Scan Online virus scanner
or Trend Micro Housecall Online virus scanner

****************************************************

Finally, reboot and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Ok, I followed all the procedures.

I did not find 180 Solutions.

I did not find any of the listed processes when I opened process manager in the safe mode. I only found the following running. I did not kill any of them.

smss.exe
winlogon.exe
services.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
explorer.exe
hijack.exe

(yes, two copies of svchost.exe)

I ran the Hijack this scan in safe mode and checked fix for all the files you listed, except
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ipsk32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\ipsk32.exe, which I could not locate.

I went on the file hunt, and found some of the files/folders, but not all of them. I could not find:

C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlsk32.dll <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crqt.exe <==file
C:\DOCUME~1\Glenda\LOCALS~1\Temp\34.tmp.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkdl32.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs3.exe <==file
c:\program files\180solutions\sais.exe <==file
krnverif.exe <==file You will have to search for this file. It may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\

I made sure that hidden files were included, and did a search on the whole C: drive, but could not find the ones listed above.

I ran CCleaner, and Adaware. Adaware found a bunch of ad/spyware and cleaned it. I then ran Panda Scan which found 42 files, all of which were spyware/adware rather than viruses, and I searched for those files and deleted them when I could find them. There were 3 or 4 that I couldn't locate. The ones that I couldn't locate were located in my Windows registry.

I have a question about the Registry - under the directory hkey_current user/software/Microsoft/windows/internetsettings/zonemaps/domains, there are all kinds of porn/gambling sites listed there. Can I/do I need to get rid of those?Are they hurting anything?

Anyway, after following those processes, my computer is operating faster, not quite as fast as what I would consider "normal", but faster than it was. And, I am able to open things that are located on the desktop, such as "My computer," etc. Which is a major victory, thank you very much!!

So, I ran Hijack this again, here is the log from this morning:

Hello linmoo,

Looks much better, only a few more items to clean.

*****************************************************
Download KillBox to the desktop. Do not run it yet, we will be using it later.

Please download this file to your desktop - http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf .

Right click on the file you downloaded and select install.
This resets the Trusted and Restricted Zones to defaults.
If you had set any Trusted and Restricted Zones, they will have to be reset.

*****************************************************
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders' and deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.

Those are remenents of removed malware. You do not need to get rid of them as they are not hurting anything. They are not appearing in your log or on your screen so I would leave them.

*****************************************************

Finally, reboot and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

OK, done.

023 will not go away. I have searched for that ipsk32.exe file every which way I can think of and cannot find it.

The computer boots up faster but programs are opening slowly.

I bet it is a running process and that is why it not being deleted.

Open the Task Manager (rt click on the gray bar at bottom of screen), look in Processes Tab and see if it is listed. If it is, then higjlight it and EndProcess.

Run Killbox program, in the field labeled "Full Path of File to Delete" enter
C:\WINDOWS\ipsk32.exe

select the "Delete on Reboot" and click on the Red X(delete file) ,when it asks if you would like to Reboot now, press the Yes button.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.

OK, I think I finally got rid of the junk. I had to go back into Regedit to get rid of any trace of ipsk32.exe, but I think it is gone. It was not in my running processes when I checked.

Thanks again for all the help. I have made a donation to Bleeping Computer as a thank you, this web site (and you) have been really helpful.

Here is the latest Hijack log. Computer is running well right now. - linmoo
