My biggest problem is a worm I'm pretty sure I downloaded somewhat recently, I found the name online somewhere but forgot it. It was along the lines of Stealth.Cyber.x.Worm or something. Other than that I spent all day yesterday cleaning out the computer, found a Win32.Generic worm/trojan one or the other and a few others. I got a lot of bad files out and the ads stopped popping up and my internet connection seems as fast as it was, but I'm pretty sure im not clean yet. Here's my HJT log and I very much appreciate any help.

I know this will slow up my support but i've been working pretty hard on this and got rid of (im pretty sure) Vundo. Atleast I've gotten rid of the security toolbar bullbleep that comes with it and O3 - Toolbar: Security Toolbar - {11A69AE4-FBED-4832-A2BF-45AF82825583} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gihhtwym.dll
that line at least from the log.

Hello and welcome to BC.

I see both McAfee and Symantec's Norton. Multiple antivirus programs can bog down your system, interfere with each other, and may even cause crashes. Please remove one of them.

Norton Removal Instructions.

McAfee Removal Tool

Please download ComboFix

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close any open browsers. Disconnect from the internet.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log please.
  • Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

The only Norton program i have is Norton ghost, I can't imagine it interfering with McAffee Antivirus and Personal Firewall so I would like to keep it. Heh and through all the work I did i'm pretty sure things have only gotten worse.

Hi,

This is a badly infected machine and it'll take several rounds to clean it. First of all, password stealing may be involved with this infection. Please change all your passwords from a clean machine.

=========================================

You'll need to disable the following guards so that they will not interfere with the fixes:

Trojan Hunter:

Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a lightblue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red. Right click it and select settings. Uncheck "Load at startup" and "Enabled". Make sure that the program, TrojanHunter itself, is also closed/not running.

SuperAntispyware :

Right-click on the shortcut from the system tray :
choose : View Control Center (preferences/options)
on the General and Startup tab:
uncheck : Start SUPERAntispyware when Windows starts
then click Close to exit.

=========================================

Open notepad (it must be notepad, not wordpad, or it won't work) and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it (starting from http......):

Save this as CFScript.txt

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

=============================================

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

The only Norton program i have is Norton ghost, I can't imagine it interfering with McAffee Antivirus and Personal Firewall so I would like to keep it.

In that case, you have some leftovers from the uninstall of Norton antivirus. Norton Ghost is OK. But, we'll deal with them later.

P.S. Do you have any files created on your desktop with the names of x.dat and z.dat?

p.s.
i don't know if you have any kind of admin status or who does and where to find them, but if i may suggest checking out teamliquid.net/forum 's "spoiler function", it's used by other forums I just don't know them, it may be useful for posters to put their logs in a spoiler. i can see if i can get the code for you if you'd like.

Hi,

I'll check your logs tomorrow. It's a little late now...

should I change the passwords now or after the computer is clean?

Would be better if you change all your passwords as soon as possible.

Till tomorrow.....

Hi,

The files z.dat and x.dat have 0 size. The folder Complete, which appears to be created around the same time as these files, is (or seems to be) empty. So, there is a good chance that the malware was not yet able to store and transfer the passwords. But, it would still be prudent to change them all anyway to be on the safe side.

You can go ahead and delete this folder, unless it's a folder you created yourself:

C:\Documents and Settings\Brian M\Complete

=============================

I notice that you are using LimeWire, a p2p file sharing program. . I would like to warn you that the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. I recommend that you remove it from your system via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

=============================

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Click Start>Run, type in appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  • Remove all entries of Runtime Environment (J2SE or JRE) that are listed.
  • Now reboot your computer.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment, and install it to your computer.
=============================

Go to Start > Run and type in cmd
Click OK

This will open a DOS command prompt. Type the following:
cd\
Hit the enter key.
You should be in the root directory and see only this C:\>
In the command window Copy and Paste the following command exactly as it appears below and hit the Enter key:
Paste this:
del C:\WINDOWS\system32\xkquygcx.tmp
Hit Enter

================================

You still have some leftover services from Norton Antivirus. You can go ahead and use the link I provided earlier to remove Norton antivirus completely from your system.

================================
Some info on the poker sites:

I think it's important to note that often these kind of programs are installed with other unwanted software, namely spyware or adware. If you did not install these programs yourself, or you do not use them any more, I would definitely recommend that you uninstall them from your computer, even if it is simply a precautionary measure. The amount of different poker software which arises on the internet means it is impossible to keep track of which ones are infected and which ones are not. If you do use the software, and wish to continue doing so, please ignore this. If you do decide to go ahead and remove the poker software, you should be able uninstall them via add/remove which can be found in the control panel. Let me know if you have any problems whilst doing so.

Here are links to some poker sites regarded as safe for your reference.

* http://www.pokerstars.net/ - This is a free to use/play site.
* http://www.pokerstars.com - This is the paid for version.

The following entries are Poker and Norton antivirus related. Using Norton Removal tool may have removed the Symantec ones already.

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries, if present:

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O23 - Service: Symantec Event Manager (ccEvtMgr) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe
O23 - Service: Symantec Password Validation (ccPwdSvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccPwdSvc.exe
O23 - Service: Symantec Settings Manager (ccSetMgr) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe

Close all browsers/windows other than HijackThis and click on "fix checked".

===============================

Restart the computer.

===============================

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove if Kaspersky online scanner is present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans for no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

======================================

Please how all that went, post a fresh HijackThis log and the Kaspersky scan result. Also, let me know how the computer is running now.

Hi,

i dont know if i said this already but the warnings from the viruses and trojans themselves have stopped so performace is markedly better.

Glad to hear that.

Most of the infected items reported by Kaspersky are in the quarantine folders. You can go ahead and delete the submit_2007-11-17 zip file from your desktop. Empty the quarantine folders of the TrendMicro housecall 6.6 and TrojanHunter 5.0.

=============================================

Open notepad (it must be notepad, not wordpad, or it won't work) and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxwurs.dll.bak
C:\Program Files\StealthBot\Logs\New Folder\Eighties classic.wma
C:\Program Files\StealthBot\Logs\New Folder\TOTALLY HIP TRACK.wma

Folder::
C:\qoobox
C:\VundoFix Backups

Save this as CFScript.txt

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

=============================================

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player[/b][/color] are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player's components. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. If you are using AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but didn't used to spy or do anything "bad". In 2006, this may have changed, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

If you decide to remove Viewpoint,

Please download Viewpoint Killer
  • Save it to your Desktop
  • Create a new folder in your desktop by right clicking on the background > New > Folder > name the folder Viewpoint Killer
  • Unzip the contents of the zip file to the newly created folder.
  • Open the Viewpoint Killer folder then run ViewpointKiller, and select File > Do All Killings.
  • Follow the prompts, selecting Yes or No, depending on which selection you are most comfortable with.
  • A logfile will be created in the folder you unzipped ViewpointKiller to, please copy and paste the contents of the logfile here.
=============================================

Norton appears to be removed except one service, still running.

Press Windows Key + R simultaneously and type: sc stop "Symantec Core LC" click OK
Press Windows Key + R simultaneously and type: sc delete "Symantec Core LC" click OK

=============================================

Scan with HijackThis and click on the following entry if still present:

O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Close all browsers/windows other than HijackThis and click on "fix checked".

==============================================

Restart your computer and post the Combofix text and a fresh HijackThis log please.
