After using IE one time to watch a Netflix movie (which does not support any other browser), i started getting popups from my system tray saying 'critical system warning' 'system alert: malware threats' 'network-i.virus@fp', and other trojan and spyware-related warnings wanting me to download supposed fixes, plus the occasional IE popup opening. I did the steps outlined in the tutorial, and after running Adaware my Symantec Anti-virus stopped working (auto-protect was disabled) and would not start up again. What is going on with my pc?? I've posted my HJT log below. Please help, if you can...

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Download ComboFix from here.
**Save it to your desktop**

In case you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

* Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".

When finished and after reboot (in case it rebooted), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

ok, i deleted the viewpoint stuff, got Combofix (log below) and ran another HJT log. I couldnt read that article you cited cuz it wouldnt open. By the way, when my computer restarted after running Combofix Spybot (which i ran yesterday per the tutorial) started up automatically and checked my pc. It then started prompting me to accept registry changes (and there were dozens, no way to accept all or reject all), so i just clicked to reject each. Then it started popping up as 'User Blacklist' and i couldnt close it. I will probably just have to shut down my pc after this til i get your response. Anyway, here are my logs... thanks.

Hi,

By the way, when my computer restarted after running Combofix Spybot (which i ran yesterday per the tutorial) started up automatically and checked my pc. It then started prompting me to accept registry changes (and there were dozens, no way to accept all or reject all)

This is because your Teatimer interfering here.

I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

teatimer also prevented the deletion of runonce keys created by spybot previously. So we'll fix these as well.

Then, * Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cgqvwmmx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qvynfjug.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ditglmhq.exe

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

ok, no more Teatimer. But, I am getting a bunch of command prompt windows (something to do with System32) opening and closing whenever the comp restarts. Maybe it's something in the registry that Spybot changed? Also, my Symantec AV auto-protect has failed to start every time since I first ran Spybot and won't re-enable (i guess i can worry about that later though). Here are the logs:

Hi,

Check and fix next entries in HijackThis:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {22C5CE8D-95EC-43D5-99DF-CA8F5B940724} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6518F6E5-04EE-4EAA-B823-36E190E9AA7F} - (no file)

But, I am getting a bunch of command prompt windows (something to do with System32) opening and closing whenever the comp restarts.

That was because Teatimer was preventing the deletion of some registry keys previously (Runonce entries set by Spybot).
They are deleted now, so you won't get these command prompt Windows anymore.

For your Norton, I recommend you reinstall it.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

I am sorry, I should have told you that you need to fix them in HijackThis.

So start HijackThis, click scan and put a checkmark against next entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {22C5CE8D-95EC-43D5-99DF-CA8F5B940724} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6518F6E5-04EE-4EAA-B823-36E190E9AA7F} - (no file)

Then click the "fix checked" button below.

ok, i fixed those files and after a few more scans w/Adaware and Spybot and restarting, the problem seems to be fixed. However, after I removed my Symantec Anti-Virus (it was actually Corporate Edition, not Norton), I was unable to reinstall it since it was licensed through my school and I am no longer a student there.

I tried downloading the Free Edition of AVG antivirus, but kept getting an error that some AVG files were corrupt and so i couldnt install it (or the free trial edition of it). So, i currently dont have any AV software (except that McAfee Stinger that i got b/c of the tutorial, but that just scans and doesnt catch viruses realtime, right?) I want to get a (preferably free) AV program on my pc ASAP that will run auto-protect/auto-scan features... any suggestions??

Thanks for all your help so far...

Hi,

Please try to install Avira:
http://www.free-av.com/
This one is also for free and is great in detection.

Let me know if that worked

hi--yes, sorry for the delay. I have had no further popup problems since my last post, but i actually installed a 30-day trial of Kaspersky AV before i got your message about Avira. Once it expires, i will probably install the Avira. Thanks for the great advice!
