Quietman7 has been helping me over in the other Forum - "Am I infected? What do I do?". We seem to have gotten rid of the Trojan, Mirar and Virtumonde but I am still being inundated by Internet Explorer Pop Ups.

Based on the last Post from Quietman7 (see Malware, Black Door Trojan, Browser Hijack, Adware, Mirar, Virtumonde, A whole lot of trouble over here!), he wanted me to run the HijackThis Software and report my findings. Please note, I have two HijackThis Logs on this post.

I had no trouble installing HijackThis, but when I ran the program I did have some troubles. The program stopped when it got to this line:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

A menu came up that said:

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself . To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as ‘hosts.’ (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose ‘Run as adminstrator’.

I pressed OK and it finished running. This is the log it showed:

I went out and edited the host log as it told me to do. I did not specifically find HijackThis Reports, but I did find some HijackThis domains.

This is what I found:
127.0.0.1 hijack-this.net
127.0.0.1 www.hijack-this.net

I deleted these two lines and saved as ‘hosts’

I rebooted the computer and reran HijackThis. I got the same message as before and clicked OK. I'm not sure what I need to do here or if the HijackThis Log is any different than the previous one. I will report what I have from the last log and wait until I hear back from someone.

This is the HijackThis Log file that came back:

Hi,

First of all, I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

I notice from the log that there are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled. TrendMicro Internet Security and Avast.
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

So you have to make a decision here and keep the Antivirus you prefer and uninstall the other one.
Then reboot after uninstalling.

Then, * Download: HostsXpert
Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\HostsXpert
Start HostsExpert.exe, click 'Restore MS Hosts file' and click OK.

Then, * Download ComboFix from here.
**Save it to your desktop**

In case you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

* Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".

When finished and after reboot (in case it rebooted), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Thank you Mieckiemoes for answering my post. Unfortunately it was 24 hours too late. I ended up going to the emergency room Wednesday night. One of my main concerns was if my financial data files were compromised in any way when looking at the culprit that infected my computer.

Since I posted this on Monday, I wasn't able to get a response from anyone/anywhere to my questions. I spoke to a friend of mine at church on Sunday who recommended a gentleman locally who would look at my computer for me. I talked to him on Tuesday and explained my situation. I told him about the help I received through your web site and he said it was right on track - a lot of things he would have done. I think he felt fairly comfortable with my past computer experience and thought I could do this on my own and save some money. At this point he wanted me to install McAfee - he is a strong supporter of that software and a couple other software programs. I picked up a copy of the software at his home Wednesday afternoon and tried to install it. I had a terrible time getting into the Install screen. While in Safe Mode, my computer kept coming up with a Message Screen every 5-8 seconds and would not even let me run the program. I called my contact and he felt at that point I should bring my computer over to his home and let him try a few other things.

I disconnected all my lines and proceeded to carry my CPU unit to the car. On my way down the steps, I thought I was on the landing in the foyer. I went to step out with my right foot and realized in mid motion that I was not on the landing. I came down on my lower right leg. The pain was very intense and I must have been seriously out of it because the first call I made on my cell phone was to the guy who was going to fix my computer - he couldn't believe I was calling him. We ended up calling an ambulance and went to the emergency room. The x-rays came back and showed I had two spiral breaks, one on the fibula below the knee and the other on the tibia 1/2 way down (that must be the shin bone). I believe I either rolled and stepped on my left foot and bruised it up pretty bad or that is where the CPU landed - one of the two. I am in a full leg cast up to my upper thigh. I go in on Monday to get more x-rays and determine where they will go from here. Worst case scenario is I will need surgery and have a rod and plates put in my leg. My length of recovery can be anywhere from 12-26+ weeks.

Meanwhile the guy who I was talking to about my computer ended up running some diagnostics and found my computer was beyond repair. He ended up restoring and reinstalling my computer. He brought it back this afternoon and I am in the process of reinstalling some of my programs. He does not think there was anything that corrupted the integrity of my files. I am going to change all my passwords and keep an eye on everything. I'm glad I've got my computer back up and running, but it was at a very high price.

Thank you for all of your help. If anyone has any advice for what I'm in store for with my leg, I'd be interested in what you have to say. In that case, we should probably move this to another forum.

Hi,

I am sorry to hear about all the problems you had in between... especially about your leg.
2 spiral breaks, well, that was a hard fall...or you have weak bones. Spiral breaks are the worst kind and take the longest to heal unfortunately. So, actually, if they put plates, it can heal faster.
For the pain, elevate the leg whenever you can, esp in bed, as the fluid when your leg is down can cause extra pressure and pain.
Also make sure you have enough Calcium, it helps build strong bones. Good sources of the mineral calcium include milk, cheese and other dairy foods, green leafy vegetables, nuts, bread and anything made with fortified flour. Or you can buy a calcium supplement at the store.

For your computer..

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

Take care!
