My computer won't boot up properly. All I get is the Dell logo screen, then, the Windows XP screen as normal. But just before it's supposed to have the Welcome screen, it starts back up again..over and over. I think I must have done something wrong, because I turned it off before it had a chance to start up (it worked fine before when I did that..).

My computer is a Dell Opti-Plex 260 with Windows XP.

(I'm kind of in a hurry, and I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum.)

Try running chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console of the XP CD.

See the following link for information on the recovery console:

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console

Use the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM to start your computer. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press 'R" to repair.

Well...do you actually have a Microsoft XP CD, not a recovery CD, not a recovery partition?

Is this your system? http://pcworld.about.com/news/Aug222002id104306.htm

Also...Dell may have some onboard utility that can help you, read your owner's manual.

Thanks for helping me, everyone. I tried Louis's suggestion, and the error was found and fixed. I had it on automatic reboot after system failure, which is why it kept starting up over and over.
