Hello.

About ten days ago, I was able to rid my system of a VirtuMonde infection through the assistance of D-Trojanator here at BleepingComputer. The cleanup was completely successful. However, as ridiculous as this sounds, I managed to reinfect myself with the exact same virus but through a different means. It's absolutely unbelievable. I stupidly ran a bad setup.exe file that my Norton Internet Security scanned and claimed was clean. So I at least have the benefit of knowing precisely when and how the infection started. I feel like such an idiot... I've never had any kind of similar problem and now it occurs to me twice within a fortnight. VirtuMonde is difficult to remove so I definitely require some assistance.

Originally I messaged D-Trojanator again but in hindsight I decided to start a new thread because I am confident that he indeed successfully cleaned my system of this infection the first time, and that this is an entirely new instance, so I thought that it required its own thread(?). I apologize if I am mistaken about this.

Here was the first thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114464/help-me-defeat-virtumonde/

I still have all of the downloaded tools necessary to begin the cleanup: HijackThis, ComboFix, Killbox, etc.

When this infection began all hell broke loose, and I encountered the following symptoms:

~ Constant pop-up windows appearing whether or not I was connected to the internet. I could scarcely close them fast enough before new ones appeared.
~ There was a new toolbar on Internet Explorer called "Security Toolbar 7.1"
~ Limewire kept starting on its own, and every time I closed it it started up again.
~ I was getting constant fake error messages from the system tray and through pop-up windows stating that I had different types of viral infections, giving me the choice to download software to remove the spyware.
~ Windows occasionally crashes; extreme Windows instability.
~ Extremely poor overall PC peformance.
~ The infection changed my screensaver option to "none."

I slowly went through all of the steps leading up to posting a HijackThis log: repeated scans with Norton, SB:S&D, AdAware, and McAfee Stinger... I deleted all temporary files and updated Windows. In the process, AdAware and Spybot:Search and Destroy identified many instances of VirtuMonde and "Win32.Trojan?" (I'm sorry, I do not remember the exact name) and cleaned most of them up and corrected most of the aforementioned problems. As of now, the only remaining problems are decreased performance and the occasional pop-up window when using Internet Explorer (but only when connected to the internet). I uninstalled Limewire for the time being, as I could not get it to stop opening on its own (and to be quite honest, after these experiences I think my file-sharing days are over).

I have an HP Media Center PC with Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2.

I'm begging you, help a computer moron sort out his PC once and for all.

Here is my HijackThis log (on a side note, D-Trojanator had me rename the HijackThis .exe file to showme.exe, and this is how I am still running the program):

I am also posting a screenshot of files in my System32 folder that were created at or shortly after the exact time of the initial infection (01:28 on 11/8/07)... I hope this may prove valuable.

Thank you so much for any assistance you can provide me!

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum GammyGoose
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 3'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Now download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Disconnect from the Internet.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.

I don't know if it is significant to what you are doing, but earlier in the evening my Norton did an automatic complete scan while I was away and showed two instances of "Trojan.Vundo." It claimed that it was only able to "partially resolve" the problem.

Thank you!

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript to your desktop.

File::

Now drag then drop the CFScript file onto ComboFix.exe as seen in the image below.

This will start ComboFix again.
After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Richie,

I ran the ComboFix script with no problems. I did however forget to disconnect from the internet before I ran CF... I hope this is okay... let me know. It may be worth noting that whenever I reboot the computer Spybot:S&D opens several dialogue boxes showing me, I think, that registry entries have been changed. I do not respond to these but simply "Exit Spybot S&D Resident" through the icon in the system tray. However, when I do this it seems to infer that the changes to the registry have been denied. I hope this has not been undoing some of your work. Should I uninstall SB:S&D for the time being?

Here is the ComboFix log:

You can enable it later once you're system is clean.

Open Spybot and click on 'Mode' and check 'Advanced Mode'.
Click on 'Tools' in bottom left hand corner.
Click on the 'System Startup' icon.
Uncheck 'Teatimer' box and/or uncheck 'Resident'.
Click the 'Allow Change' box.
Then, check next to the computer clock to see if the icon for Spybot is still there.
If it is, right click it and choose 'exit Spybot-S&D Resident'.
Restart the computer.
If you find you're experiencing problems disabling Spybot's Tea-Timer,follow the info in the link below:

Okay then, here's the craic:

I was unable to effectively disable Spybot's Teatime/Resident function after several tries, so I simply uninstalled it. I still have the downloaded .exe file if I need to reinstall it.

I ran HijackThis and fixed all of the indicated instances.

I downloaded and ran SuperAntiSpyware, which produced the following log:

At this point I ran into a snag. I installed and ran the Panda Activescan three times, but the scan kept getting "hung up" on a file named c:/EPSONREG/EPSONREG.exe (something to do with my scanner no doubt). The scan would stop suddenly and all the Internet Explorer windows would close.

So, I asked myself, "What would RichieUK do?" In lieu of the Activescan I ran a Kaspersky Scan, which produced the following results. I hope this scan will suffice (It seemed to produce very similar results):

Richie, thanks for both the final cleanup instructions and the links... everything is running perfectly so I consider the problem resolved. My P2P days are over, you can trust me on that. Thank you so much for your time... you helped save much more than my PC. I wish I would have known about BleepingComputer a long time ago, for this is really an amazing service you all provide. Please accept my meager donation as a token of my gratitude.

Cheers,

~Mark
