Hi

I have virus or something that is masquerading as a security program. It keeps changing my Internet Explorer home page, has taken over my desktop a couple times with a huge red picture shouting DANGER - your computer is infected click here etc. It continuously opens browser windows on it's own usually to websites such as softwarereferral.com, pcsecure.com and safenavweb.com. I have trendmicro installed in my computer, when I run the scan it detects several infected files and it then proceeds to remove them, but still the problem persists. How can I get my Internet Explorer back under my control ? PC is running Windows XP.

Thank You for any help you can provide. Here is the hijack log.

Hello sq4444 and welcome to BC

My name is SNOWHITE and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please follow the steps below exactly in the order they are written:

Step #1

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

NOTE: If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

NOTE: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Step #2

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.
In your next post please include the following reports:
  • SmitfraudFix report
  • dss scan reports main.txt and extra.txt
Let me know how the things went.

Regards,
SNOWHITE

PLEASE READ THIS POST COMPLETELY, IT MAY MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS POST INTO A NEW TEXT DOCUMENT OR PRINT IT FOR REFERENCE LATER

Please follow the steps below exactly in the order they are written:

Step #1

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Step #2
1. Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
2. Download combofix from one of these links:
Link1
Link2
3. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
4. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
In your next post please include the following reports:
  • SmitfraudFix report
  • ComboFix report
  • New HijackThis log (run after ComboFix has finished its work.)
Let me know how the things went.

Regards,
SNOWHITE

sq4444,

Please follow the steps below exactly in the order they are written:

Step #1

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
"{F17B1418-2C0C-4295-BD55-BCDD3C730FBE}"=-
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F17B1418-2C0C-4295-BD55-BCDD3C730FBE}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{84C94803-B5EC-4491-B2BE-7B113E013B77}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\netadv.ToolBar]

Save this as "CFScript"

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Step #2

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

* Optional

WildTangent Web Driver - Wild Tangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although its not technically considered spyware it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including

Operating System Version
CPU Type and Speed
Memory Amount
Video Card type and Driver Version
Sound Card type and Driver Version
DirectX Version
Location that the Web Driver was installed from
It is also a MAJOR resource hog.

The next program is very likely the reason your system is infested with malware. Even when a program like this is not infected itself, it will still bring malware into your system because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. I recommend that you remove this programs from your system.

LimeWire 4.12.11

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\Program Files\LimeWire <-- Delete this folder if you have uninstalled LimeWire

Close Windows Explorer.

Step #3

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them.
