Is it possible to have both a router and a software firewall

I have a Lynksys router already installed on my computer.I have just downloaded and set up Sygate,a software firewall.Is this okay?Am I adding anymore protection with Sygate?

A router will act as a hardware firewall but wont alert you if there is anything running on your computer that is trying to reach the internet without your permission. Some people report a slight slowdown by adding an extra firewall. If you do not have a problem, then leave it on
