Hi guys,
my laptop has been slow these past couple of weeks, which I put down to my very full hard drive. However I got a popup above my tray recently telling me I had been infected with spyware and needed to download an antispyware program called MalwareAlarm, needless to say i didnt, but when closing the popup it opened a browser window, which I quickly closed. Nothing appeared to have been put onto my computer. Having done a bit of searching around on the web I found tht I have trojan.popuper through a spyware doctor scan. This is the only program that has detected it.
Not wanting to mess around with the registry values and keys I've followed the steps in your 'Preparation Guide to Posting a Hijackthis Log'. The trojan is still there after following the security steps, so here I am posting a log!
Other stuff that has happened recently is browsers are taking longer to open as well as websites now regularly taking an age to load or not at all, which may or may not be down to the trojan.
This seems quite a common infection so I apologise if this is fairly trivial for you and it looks like I'm taking a sledgehammer to nut,
following is the log

thanks very much for your time

a worried but optimistic canary

Hi there, and welcome to BC!
My name is David; I'll be handling your log today.

There are no immediate problems with the Hijackthis log, it's clean.
However, there are a couple of unncessesary programs we can remove from your startup.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Hijackthis only scans on the surface, so to double check for infections, let's run one more scanner.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Hey David
Feeling very welcome! Thank you very much for time and help, a real star!

I've removed the two entries you listed through HijackThis, out of interest what did they do on startup?

Following are the ComboFix and the new HijackThis logs. When I was running Combofix, Comodo firewall kept popping up saying that it was displaying typical worm or virus behaviour, I think this is safe as I remember reading something like this in another thread but thought I should let you know all the same.

Again thank you and ta!

A feeling better canary

There's nothing looking out of place in the combofix log; yes you will often get alerts from antivirus programs that the program is acting like a virus, but I can assure it's legitimate. I want to run one more scanner before I let you go...

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
Note that this scanner will only work on Internet Explorer, so please use this browser for the scan.
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.

When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

Hi hope all is well

Following is the Kaspersky log and the new HijackThis log. The Kaspersky Online scan took a lot of attempts before the virus definitions would download, dont know if this is a common problem.
I have to say that I'm quite surprised that everything is turning out to be clear so far. Would you say that the MalwareAlarm message boxes are just one of those things? Plus Spyware Doctor doesnt seem 100% credible to me, Spybot nor AdAware or no other scan has found traces of the trojan.popuper, would like your view on that if possible please.

Again I'd like to say thanks and show my appreciation in how quick the responses have been, I can imagine how busy you must be!

Regards Canary

This is interesting, as the Kaspersky log is clean too. It could be that spyware doctor is reporting this 'infection' as a false positive though. I wouldn't go as far as saying that the program isn't "creditable", but I know that in the past it has had a problem of detecting legitimate files/registry keys as being infected, so this could be a similar case perhaps? I'm quite sure that either combofix or kaspersky would have picked up any infected files if they were present, but there is a possibility that it is simply hiding.

Let's do a registry search for any related entries, which could be picked up by Spyware Doctor.
Also, is there any way you can make a note of the files/keys that it is flagging as MalwareAlarm?
Oh, and can you describe the box that says that you infected?

Download Bobbi Flekman's RegSearch from
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/regsearch.php

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it RegSearch. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the top Search Box:

malwarealarm

then on the second line down paste the following:

malware

Now hit OK. After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the string. The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe

Run HijackThis.
On the first menu, click Open the Misc Tools Section
Click Open Uninstall Manager
Click Save List - Save it anywhere.
A notepad will pop-up after it's saved, please copy everything in that Notepad and paste it here.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Open the file and it will extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1, and press Enter.
A text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Hi Dave!
This is starting to become quite a mystery! What usually happens is that I'll be browsing the internet and then the window will close by itself for no reason. Then a popup/message box appears above the tray in the bottom bar where the time and other icons are shown.
When I click to close this box or on cancel it will open up an internet explorer window with the MalwareAlarm website displayed. I've never had a proper look at it as at this point I normally hurridly close the window.
I'm sorry to say that I can't remember what the messagebox said exactly but it was along the lines of 'Your computer has been infected with spyware, download MalwareAlarm now to fix the problem.'
The first time this happened I had AVG Free Edition, Spybot and trial version of Spyhunter installed on my laptop. The strange thing is I was at a networked computer station at uni yesterday and the same popup came up, browser closing automatically etc. I was on the 'How Stuff Works' website at the time.

The Spyware Doctor scan says that I have thirteen high threat level infections on my computer;

Trojan-PWS.Tanspy (1 infection)
Registry Key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicrosoftWindows\CurrentVersion\Control P...\load

Trojan.Popuper (12 infections)

Hope you can make something out of all this info, I certainly can't!

Ok, let's try the following:

Please open notepad and and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2171144437-2731419730-511982901-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{A6ACAE64-F798-4930-AD86-BD3FB32038DB}]

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2171144437-2731419730-511982901-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{84938242-5C5B-4A55-B6B9-A1507543B418}]

Save this as "fix.reg" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Doubleclick on the fix.reg and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Reboot back into normal mode.

Please visit Panda Online to carry out a virus scan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
Enter your personal details.
Click the big Scan Now button.
It will ask to install various content - please allow this.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan, which may take a while.

When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
When the scan completes, click the See Report button.
Click Save Report and save the file to your desktop.
Post the contents of the report in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

Also, scan again with spyware doctor and let me know again what it finds.

Evening,

It seemingly looks better! I've followed the steps that you outlined and following are the new scan results. Unfortunately for the Panda scan I closed the window before I saved the report and when I scanned for the second time the results were different. I believe in the first scan Panda removed something that was a 'virus' that had something to do with the SmitFraud Fix program. There were also three internet cookies too I remember. I hope that this didnt affect what you explected to find too much.
Im curious to know what the new registry entries did. Scanning again with Spyware Doctor it found no traces of trojan.popuper, just Tanspy and files that were described as 'Spyware, Known Bad Sites' in my program files and documents and settings, which I'll go and delete.

Trojan-PWS.Tanspy (1 infection)
Registry Key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicrosoftWindows\CurrentVersion\Control P...\load

Regards and Thanks
A Happier Canary

Ok, the files that Panda found are harmless, you can ignore them.

Click start > run and copy and paste the following in bold then hit enter:
reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\load" C:\export.reg

Now, go to your C: drive and look for the export.reg, it should look like this: Posted Image
Right click it and choose "edit". A notepad window will open. Copy and paste the contents back here.

Ok, that final entry that Spyware Doctor can't seem to remove, I would imagine it is a false positive - it's probably going to be a harmless registry key, so I would be inclined to ignore it for the time being.

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time.
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to create "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause false alarms - When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't. Also it can cause system performance problems; your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either AVG or Symantec.

How is the computer running now?

Hi, all seems to be good now

Will it be sufficient to turn off/disable Norton rather than remove it all together? I've heard it's quite a pig to uninstall!
I have to admit that I've gone rather overboard on the protection, there are programs everywhere! I don't know if you can advise me on this for the best possible set-up or provide a link to somewhere.
The laptop does seem to be running quicker now :) but don't know if this is just a placebo effect type thing  but the boot up and opening programs are still lagging a wee bit. My hard drive is very full however, are there steps I can take to speed up my PC or would getting an external hard drive be best to free up space. Again I realise this is trojan unrelated so would understand if you tell me to search elsewhere!!

Thank you ever so much for all the help you've given me, I've found it easy to follow and logical!

Regards
Canary

Oh, sorry, one other thing, shall I remove all the programs that I downloaded and installed during the diagnostic?

Thank you again
