MS Defender caught Backdoor: win32/Zonebac.B, but it repeatedly reappears on reboot. The HJT log shows my trusted zone sites have *.doginhispen.com AND *.whataboutadog.com. I have no idea where the infections can from.

I have run Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5, Ad-Aware SE Pro build 1.06 r.1, AVG Antivirus 7.5, AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, Trend Micro Houeecall 6.6 online, Panda ActiveScan online. All of these had the latest definitions but failed to detect any problems.

I would greatly appreciate your expert guidance on how to remove the infections permanently. Thanks.

I finally ran HiJackThis 2.0.2 and here is the log:

Hi -

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.doginhispen.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.whataboutadog.com

Close ALL browsers and open windows except HijackThis and click 'Fix checked'.

Reboot your computer.

Download FindAWF and save the file to your Desktop
Double-click FindAWF.exe to start the tool.
Select Option 1 by pressing 1 and then Enter. The scan will start and a log will open (awf.txt)

Post back with with the contents of awf.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi waterfalls:

Thanks for your assistance.
Here are the logs you requested, after following your instructions. (Looks like *.whataboutadog came back after the reboot.)

Hi -

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following item:
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.whataboutadog.com

Close ALL browsers and open windows and click 'Fix checked'.

Reboot your computer.

Start FindAWF.exe
Select option 2 by pressing 2 and then Enter. A text file will open (files.txt).
In that files.txt, copy and paste the following list of files to be restored:

"C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\qttask.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\bak\MSASCui.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak\ctfmon.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Creative\Fatal1ty Professional Laser Mouse\bak\ctusbms.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\bak\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\bak\ISUSPM.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\bak\jusched.exe"

Close the files.txt and click Yes to save the changes.
FindAWF wil now terminate the bad processes if running, delete the bad files and restore/replace them with the good files.
Then it will open a log. Copy and paste the contents of that log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi waterfalls:

Thanks for all your help.

I got as far as the finalising the FindAWF.exe process option 2, and saved the log that was generated.
However, when I tried to run HijackThis, I got a flash of a "blue screen" and then the system rebooted.
On reboot, HijackThis ran successfully and the log is below after the FindAWF log.

By the way, lately I have being getting occasional random "blue screen" reboots. Is this known for the viruses that I have, or is this a separate issue?

Hi -

I don't know if the BSOD's are caused by malware. We'll do another scan when we've finished getting rid of the AWF infection on your computer.

The following are two sets of directions. Follow them in the order stated. This is important.

Start FindAWF, select Option 3, by pressing 3 and then enter.
This will open the text file folders.txt
Copy and paste next list in it:

C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\qttask.exe
C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\bak\MSASCui.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak\ctfmon.exe
C:\Program Files\Creative\Fatal1ty Professional Laser Mouse\bak\ctusbms.exe
C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\bak\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\bak\ISUSPM.exe
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\bak\jusched.exe

Then close folders.txt and let it save the changes.
FindAWF will now remove the bak folders and open a log aferwards.
Post the log in your next reply.

Start FindAWF again, select Option 4 and enter.
When done, Press E then Enter to EXIT.

Copy and paste the contents of the folders.txt log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi -

There's a program on your computer that I'm not familiar with. It is showing that there are sub-folders that contain a Java file. I don't know if the AWF infection moved them to it. This is the filepath:
D:\Program Files\Techland\Xpand Rally Xtreme\jre\bin\jusched.exe

The \jre and \bin folders are sub-folders of QuickTime. The file jusched.exe is a QuickTime file that checks for QuickTime updates.

So, I want you to check this file by doing the following.

Go to this website:
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On the middle, you will see 'Browse'
Click the Browse button and navigate to this file:

D:\Program Files\Techland\Xpand Rally Xtreme\jre\bin\jusched.exe

Click Open.
Then click the Send button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient and wait for the scanning to complete.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results in Notepad and post the results in your next reply.

Download and scan with CCleaner.
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free Basic or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
3. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop-up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Click "exit" when done.

Download Superantispyware
  • Load Superantispyware and click the check for updates button.
  • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.
  • Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
  • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
  • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply.
Post back with the results of the VirusTotal scan, the SuperAntispyware log and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running now.

Hi waterfalls:

I could not access Beepingcomputer.com last night, while all other websites were O.K. However, there is no problem today.
Xpand Rally Xtreme is a Car game that might use QuickTime.

My computer is running well with no BSOD's since the one I reported yesterday.

I followed all your steps and below are the results of the VirusTotal scan, the SuperAntispyware log and the new HijackThis log.

I would like to thank you for your dedication and throughness.

Hi -

I couldn't access BleepingComputer last night either. It may have been down for maintenance.

Things are looking much better. I need you to run FindAWF because there was a typo in the step.

Start FindAWF, select Option 3, by pressing 3 and then enter.
This will open the text file folders.txt
Copy and paste the following list in it:

C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak
C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\bak
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak
C:\Program Files\Creative\Fatal1ty Professional Laser Mouse\bak
C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\bak
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\bak
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\bak

Then close folders.txt and let it save the changes.
FindAWF will now remove the bak folders and open a log aferwards.
Post the log in your next reply.

Next, start FindAWF again.
Press E then Enter to EXIT.

Since you have the ActiveX for Panda's Online Scanner, please perform a complete system online scan.

Post the Panda log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi waterfalls:

I did exactly what you asked, but the second time I started FindAWF, I just pressed E to Exit. I did NOT do Option 4 before exiting.

Hi -

You did it correctly. Just a couple of more things...

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following item:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\bak\ISUSPM.exe" -scheduler
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Close ALL browsers and open windows except HijackThis and click 'Fix checked'.

There's one more folder, so start FindAWF select Option 3, by pressing 3 and then enter.
This will open the text file folders.txt
Copy and paste the following list in it:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\bak

Then close folders.txt and let it save the changes.
FindAWF will now remove the bak folders and open a log aferwards.
Copy and paste the contents of that log in your next reply.

Start FindAWF again, press E then Enter to EXIT.

REBOOT your computer.

Post back with the folders.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi waterfalls:

I was wondering about one of the results of the Panda Online Scan: "Adware:adware/cws Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Jeety\Favorites\Health"
I could not see this in the "Health" favourites. Any action required?

I followed your instructions and here are the logs:

Hi -

I was wondering about one of the results of the Panda Online Scan: "Adware:adware/cws Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Jeety\Favorites\Health"
I could not see this in the "Health" favourites. Any action required?

I wouldn't worry about it. It's a "false positive". Notice that it didn't point to a specific file. If there was a cws infection, SuperAntiSpyware would have nuked it. If you want to double-check, scan the folder with AVG Anti-Spyware.

We finally got rid of the AWF infection. The infection substitutes the executable file of an application with a dummy file and moves the legit file to those 'bak' folders. You had several apps that weren't working. All of the dummy files have been deleted and replaced with the legit files, and all of the 'bak' folders have been deleted. It also appears that one or more of the dummy files were causing the BSOD's.

What we last fixed in HijackThis was to remove the remnants of the infection. The result is that QuickTime will not load on bootup which it does not need to do. Also, the UpdateService of InstallShield was infected (but is fine now). This checks for the latest updates from Macrovision products. I'm sure you can do this manually instead of having this program access the Internet on its own.

Your log looks clean.

I see no software Firewall program present on your system. This will greatly help in preventing your system from being infected by malware. Please install a Firewall program because you really do need one.
Comodo is a good FREE software Firewall program.
See, Understanding and Using Firewalls

If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

Install IE-SPYAD. It puts over 20,000 sites in your restricted zone, so you will be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that are not actually innocent at all.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs scan your computer frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

I suggest you perform an online virus scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.

Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

Hi waterfalls:

Great job!

I followed your recommendations and I added/deleted the System Restore and installed COMODO and SPYWAREBLASTER.

Your link to IE-SPYAD lead me to FUNKYTOAD's ZONEOUT 3.5 (http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/15/33/).
Is this program recommended?

I could not see any option in SPYWAREBLASTER 3.5.1 to have it loaded at startup. Does it automatically do so? If so, where can I see that is is running? If it find a problem, does it then "pop up"?

Finally, the "protection" programs that I have on my computer are:

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5
Ad-Aware SE Pro build 1.06 r.1
AVG Antivirus 7.5
AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
SUPERAntispyware 3.9.1008
SPYWAREBLASTER 3.5.1
COMODO Firewall Pro 2.4.18.184
Window DEFENDER
(FUNKYTOAD's ZONEOUT 3.5) not loaded yet.

Which of the above should I "keep" and have loaded automatically at startup, to avoid any unnecessary or undesirable duplication?

What is the order of preference for the following Online Scanners?
Trend Micro's Housecall
Panda ActiveScan
BitDefender

I apologise for bombarding you with all these questions, but this has been quite an education for me.

THANKS.
