Where does my SD memory card Card show up? I have a slot on my laptop to insert one and I wanted to use it to back up some data.
I thought it would just show up under my list of drives, but it's nowhere to be found. My Hard drive, flash drives and my DVD all show up on the list, but not the memory stick.
I tried rebooting after it was installed also to no avail.
I know it works because I use it in mt GPS unit to store data and it's fine. If I plug my GPS in via USB cable to the laptop it shows up and displays the files just fine.
I also tried reformatting it to use in the PC. No go.
Any ideas would be appreciated?
I have WIN XP Home.

What's the make and model of the laptop? Does the card reader show in Device Manager? Open the Run command and type:

devmgmt.msc and hit enter and expand all the (+'s)

Thanks for the reply Mark. Turns out the reader was bad. I bought a cheap reader and it works fine now.

Curious,

How did you determine the reader was bad?

I went out and bought a USB card reader and it found my card. That led me to think the internal reader in the laptop wasn't working.

Believe it or not, that reader on the laptop may be good. sometimes they're turned off in
the computers bios. If you're content with the current situation, stick with that.

If you want to check out the Bios see the manufacturer's website.

I've had a lot of problems recently with SD card readers. The one of my Toshiba wouldn't install until I found an HP driver for it (I'm using Vista BTW). Another Toshiba that I worked on recently wouldn't recognize it until I plugged an SD card in while installing the Gateway software that I'd located - and I still had to manually install the device after running the installation routine.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
