Had an svchost.exe hogging cpu while checking processes in
avanced Process Utility and accidentally killed it.

I run XP Pro sp2 on a HP a1100y Asus Grafito mb

Told me "windows needs to close" then blank screen. In system tools I attempted to reactivate said process, then reboot...

Now Win starts then nothing; blank screen.
Tried "last working" version; nada
Not even safe mode will run. Just a list of driver.sys then frozen..

And I no longer have XP disk <but is legit ver.>

Am I hopeless?

Without an XP disk you are in a bit of trouble. Can you borrow one from a friend (make sure it's the same type as your operating system: Home or Pro)? If you can get one then the following post has some troubleshooting suggestions.

10 things you can do when Windows XP won't boot

If you can't get hold of a disk, does your computer have a recovery partition that you can restore from?
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who haven't got it.

Thanks for taking the time,
I downloaded and created the supplemental 6 floppy disk recovery tool, but always snag at boot.sys... which has to be bad...
and therefor have to abort.
Are you saying that if I can find another copy of XP pro I can probably save this thing? Could I buy one? No friends to speak of...

if you buy one it has to be the same version
if its a retail then you you need a retail
if its an oem then you need an oem
and it has to be what ever windows that are installed like
windows xp home.. service pack 2
windows xp pro...service pack 2

retail can be bought at staples store
oem can be bought at repair shops

oem product key stickers are blue and some have orange color with them
retail is like green

Thanks,
Not familiar with oem but I know it was XP Pro sevice pack 2

I'm obviously a stupid person with no buisness toying with the process utility...just a quick final query: how common is this sort of blunder?

And how frequent are the recoveries?

you couldve used process explorer

and that particular process you killed just couldve been disabled instead of killing it
but without knowledge of killing processes it can certainly cause damage as you found out

question...... how long does your computer freeze when you try safemode

its an hp you got
did you ever make recovery discs for it
i have hp and made recovery cds

currently attempting to acquire a recovery/install disk...

you guys are the only ones (of all the online forums) who bothered to help me out on this one, I truly appreciate it.

when you turn computer on
do you see anything at bottom of screen like
F10 recovery
F12 system restore
anything like that

something like that should show at the powering up stage
if you do see anything like that try one its a small chance
